Get Creative
The best part of making your own gift tags is getting all your fabric scraps out and creating your designs. You do not need Christmas fabrics, you can use any fabrics that you have. Cut them to any shapes you like.
Here are some I have laid out to make. I love using simple rectangles and also cutting out triangles to represent Christmas trees.

TOP TIP: You can fray the edges of your pieces of fabric by poking a pin into the fabric a couple of threads in from the edge and then pulling it out towards the edge of the fabric. Repeat on all the edges! This can look really effective!
Also don’t be afraid to layer it up as much as you like.
Secure Your Design
Now you get to decide whether to sew or glue your design. If you would like to glue it then simply glue your layers together using whatever glue you have available. A multipurpose glue, tacky glue or fabric glue will work really well.
If you would like to sew your layers (like me) then simply use a running stitch to hold your layers together. Alternatively you could use fancy stitching to embellish your design.
However you secure your fabric scraps just make sure you are happy with it before you fasten it to your gift tag.
I use double sided tape as it is so easy to use and I do not get glue all over me. I apply the tape to the gift tag as it is easier to get the back off it when it is stuck to card than fabric.

Add Your Hanger
Now all that is left to do is to add your hanger. You can use whatever you like but I have found twine, embroidery thread and ribbon all work really well.
Simply cut to twice the length you want, fold it in half, feed it through the hole in the gift tag and feed the two ends through the loop you have created. Pull those end and it will be secured to the tag.
Now, go and make them for all your parcels.
And next …
Of course, you can use this technique to make gift tags for any occasion, not just Christmas!
Another great idea for gifts is to make fabric gift bags. I love these drawstring bags for gift bags and so do the lucky recipients! If you would like to make your own you can learn how to here.
