Painting by numbers has been around for decades. However, modern acrylic painting by numbers kits are a far cry from the old oil painting ones. They are rising in popularity as a great relaxing hobby that helps you to de-stress. Paint a Moment are a UK based company that provide just such kits and ships worldwide.
I was lucky enough to be gifted a ‘Highland Cow’ paint by numbers kit from them and I have just finished it. I really enjoyed it and want to share my experience with you.

What you will get in your kit
- Printed Canvas (rolled on a foam tube)

- Set of paints (you can choose between 24, 36 or 48 – I chose 24)

This video shows you exactly what I got in my kit. It was well packaged and arrived in a sealed plastic delivery bag to protect it from rain.
First impressions were good but I did wonder how on earth I was going to paint all those tiny sections. I chose the 20cm by 30cm (8″ by 12″) picture and was wondering if I had done the right thing. But, more about that later!
The Painting Experience
I will start with a confession. I was going to time how long this kit took me but I did it over a few weeks in small bursts so I completely forgot. Plus, whenever I was painting I got so absorbed into the process that I forgot all about timings (and indeed everything else).
The paints were good quality and unlike some other kits I did not have to water down any of the paints. All the numbers covered very easily on the canvas, even with the light coloured paints.
I used the brushes that came with the kit so that I could check them out for you. They were really good and I did an awful lot of this kit with the smallest one!

I was concerned about the tiny detail in this picture but as I got into it I realised that I didn’t need to be. The magnifier on my phone was put to good use and I did refer to the printed picture but actually the detail was rather enjoyable to paint. I was fascinated that many sections were very similar colours but when I had completed a section I could see that they added depth to the overall picture.
Regarding how relaxing this kit was, I can’t recommend it enough. I loved painting it and it was a great escape from real life when it was all a bit too difficult! The intricacies are absorbing and allowed me to switch off.
To be honest, I craft to relax and stretch my creativity so this kit really fitted in on the relaxation front.
I am glad I chose the Highland cow as I really enjoyed seeing him appear as I worked down the picture. It is for my son, who loves highland cows and he is really pleased with it!

Final Result & Recommendation
My completed painting looks just like I expected it to – pretty impressive for a woman who openly admits that she can’t really draw or paint! I am happy to hang it on the wall and say that I painted it. More importantly, so is my son!
When it comes to pricing of the kit, I do feel that it was good value for money (had I paid for it) and gave me hours and hours of enjoyment. Paint by numbers kits are more about the experience than the finished painting in my opinion.

I would definitely recommend this kit for Highland cow fans who want to relax. Indeed, I would recommend a Paint a Moment kit for beginners to this craft and cozy weekend crafters looking for a new project.
They have a wide selection of kits to choose from and indeed you can have any photo turned into a paint by numbers kit. If you do buy anything remember to use code CHRISTINESCRAFTSUK for 15% off your whole order

Highland cows are so adorable! This looks like a lovely way to slow down and enjoy some creative time. There’s something satisfying about watching a picture come together as you paint.
I so agree, especially when it has so much character as it develops.
