Create your Star Felt Ornaments
Prepare your Star Shapes
Start by downloading and printing off the star template. Cut out the star shape and that is your pattern. Use your pattern to cut out 2 felt stars. They can be in the the same felt or different colours.
If you want to decorate your stars then now is the time. If not simply move down to the next step.
Tips for Decorating your Felt Stars
- Use a variety of felt colors to create a festive and colorful set of ornaments.
- Experiment with different embroidery stitches to create unique designs.
- Add embellishments like beads, sequins, or buttons to your ornaments.
- Make a variety of sizes of stars to add visual interest to your Christmas tree. Simple print the template out different sizes using your printer settings.
Here are some designs I did to give you some ideas:
Assemble your Felt Stars
Take your 2 stars and place one on top of the other making sure that the wrong sides are together. Decide where you want the top of your star to be. Cut a hanger out of ribbon or cord or even embroidery thread that is as long as you want your hanger to be plus another couple of inches. Mine are about 6″ long giving hangers that are about 2″ long.
Fold your hanger in half and knot the two ends together. This will prevent then from pulling through to the right side. If you are using quite wide ribbon do not knot it. You don’t need to. Place your hanger between the two stars where you want it to go and pin it in place.
Now start sewing your star closed using a blanket stitch. If you have never done it before I have a fully detailed blanket stitch tutorial here. As you pass over your hanger make sure to go through your ribbon or through the loop that you made if you are using cord or embroidery thread.
Before you complete the star, perhaps with one point to go, it is time to add some stuffing. Add as much or as little as you like. Once you are happy complete your blanket stitch around the edge. Complete stuffing the last point as you sew around it.
You should now have a completed DIY felt ornament in the shape of a star. There is nothing stopping you making some more in different shapes too!
