A Review of the Halloween Needle Felting Kit

Are you ready for some creative Halloween fun? Well, I am and I was lucky enough to be gifted this fabulous Halloween needle felting kit from Amazon. I am going to tell you all about it and give you my honest opinions on the quality of the kit and what I thought of it. Halloween craft kits are great to get you in the mood for Halloween and to work on as the evenings get darker.

I have only done a bit of needle felting before and nothing on this scale so I was a bit nervous (spoiler alert, I didn’t need to be). This is needle felting for beginners and experienced needle felters alike.

Overall Box

The kit came well packaged and once I got in I was presented with this box. Obviously it is fabulously Halloween but I loved the quote on the box, ‘Feeling restless? Discover tranquility by challenging yourself and creating your own masterpiece!’ I felt inspired and also free to adapt the kit to what I wanted but more of that later! This box is over 12″ by 13″ so a sizeable kit!

Once you open the box (sorry I forgot to take a picture before I attacked it!) you find an inner layer with numbered boxes and an instruction booklet. The numbered boxes are all different sizes and there is a bit of the scene behind each door. It is called a blind kit because you do not know what is behind each door. The different sizes roughly equate to how long each section will take. It all adds to the fun!

The instruction booklet has step by step instructions and photos to help you. But, more importantly each page has a QR code that links to an instructional video for that item. The videos are really good and helpful when you are not sure on any bits. Especially important if you are new to needle felting.

Needle Felting Tools

So, first you open up the section with the tools in. I did wonder what would be included but I didn’t need to worry. There is a felting block to work on, 2 finger guards (vital), 2 handles and a whole load of needles (I did not count them).

I love the inclusion of 2 handles because it means that you can do this kit with a friend or family member together. If you don’t have a needle felting block to work on you can always use a piece of foam. As you can see, I took this photo after needle felting. I was too impatient to start.

You may well be glad of all those needles as needle felting needles are very fine and snap easily. How I managed to only snap one during this project I don’t know!

Creating my Halloween Masterpiece

Getting Started

It was exciting to open each box and have no idea what you would find in there. Obviously I could guess what was in the larger boxes and what was in the smaller ones but that only narrowed it down!

I actually started with the skull and bones. It was a good idea to start with a small part as I did not feel overwhelmed. What I would say is that this kit is quite large so consider where you are putting the finished item at the end. The videos give you a really good idea of what size you should be making your items. I actually made mine a bit smaller because I knew that it would be a little bit big for it’s location.

The quality of the materials is excellent and you will have plenty of the wool rovings. There is loads of each colour for each element so no worries there. The colours are vibrant and exciting as you get to mix them to create new colours. There are also plenty of pipe cleaners to make the items that require them. So, you can relax and craft away and not worry about running out.

Top Tips

Earlier I mentioned the needles and how fine they are. It is important to work in and out in a straight line and not bend the needles at all. They break very easily but so do all needle felting needles. Just take care and be reassured that you have plenty. The handle means that the needles are easy to use without strain.

If you are having any issues with your needle felting then usually it means that you have not needle felted it enough yet. You really have to needle felt these items a lot to make them firm and robust.

In the instructional videos they do not wear finger guards but they are in the kit and I thoroughly recommend them. You will probably stab your fingers as you work on the intricate pieces so they really protect you. I did hardly any of this kit without them on and then I was very careful! I managed to not stab my fingers at all but I hit the finger guards many times.

It was very enjoyable to do this project over quite a few evenings and I found it really relaxing and I must admit each day my family checked in to see what the latest item was. They enjoyed it too!

The only issue I had was that I don’t think I added enough needle felting to the base so I found it a bit floppy. I solved that by adding a piece of cardboard underneath once the whole project was finished.

My final top tip is to relax your shoulders and your grip on the needle and enjoy your project taking shape.

My Conclusion

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this Halloween needle felting kit and I am now much more confident with my needle felting. Do not worry if you have never done 3d needle felting before, you will be fine. I feel that this kit is suitable for beginners and experienced needle felters and is great to get you in the Halloween mood.
