Overview

Pattern Details

This pattern is the Knitcraft Flower Garden Crochet Jumper Digital Pattern 0270 available from Hobbycraft in the UK.

As it is a digital download you could make it up anywhere in the world.

The jumper is based on granny squares and as such is very accessible. It makes a nice warm jumper that is great for everyday wear.

Project Summary

I used the recommended yarn (not necessarily in the same colours) and it is a Double Knit (DK yarn). Note – this is in the UK where it is thicker than 4-ply but lighter than Aran. The Knitcraft Everyday yarn is also acrylic which is great for me as I can’t wear wool.

This project uses a 4.5mm hook which is a US size 7 and I made Medium size. I have no idea how long this project took as I kept crocheting granny squares over a long period. I interspersed other sewing projects along the way.

My Perspective

As I said earlier, I consider myself an intermediate crocheter and I think this pattern is perfect for that level. I do think a beginner would manage so long as they had already tried some other projects. I wouldn’t make this your first project!

I chose this project for 2 main reasons. Firstly I liked the look of it and secondly I was in a granny square phase. I was loving making different granny squares!

Pattern Clarity

Written Instructions

As an intermediate crocheter I think good written instructions are essential. I do not have the experience to make up any bits that are missing or unclear.

I found the instructions largely easy to follow. The granny square instructions were nice and clear. It is obvious when to stop depending on the size chosen. I think that any issues I had with assembling the jumper were my lack of experience. With hindsight I should have spent more time reading before launching myself into it!

The pattern is in UK terms and remains consistent throughout. There were plenty of opportunities to check your stitch count and make sure you were on track. I found this really helpful! There are no charts in this pattern but to be honest I don’t think it needed them and personally they may have just confused me!

Sizing and Gauge

Tension is clearly stated and easy to check. It tells you what size your granny squares should be so you can check as soon as you complete one. The tension for the sleeves is also stated but, to be honest, I didn’t even look at that!

This pattern covers most sizes as it goes from S to 3XL. It is also easy to make it up to the different sizes. The instructions for each size are clear.

Once it is made up it fits as expected. My only issue is with the rib around the bottom and that is my mistake. My lack of experience meant that I made the rib a little too long and it doesn’t pull the jumper in as much as I would like. Not the fault of the pattern!

Materials & Techniques

The yardage was pretty accurate as I broke into all the balls of yarn I purchased. Obviously you do not use much of some colours as they are only used for small details.

As a side note I love to wind all my yarn into yarn cakes like these ones here using my Etcokei electric yarn winder. You can learn all about it here.

The pattern does not use any non-standard stitches or techniques so you do not need to worry about that.

Construction & Execution

The construction of this jumper is nice and straightforward. You crochet your squares together to make the front and the back. Then you crochet those together.

You make your sleeves flat and then attach them to the front and back before completing with the underarm and side seams. Finally neck edging and welt are added.

Stitch repetition meant that this was a great project to work on in an evening (in front of the television). I very quickly learnt the granny square pattern and then the sleeves are easy to follow and repeat.

Final Result & Recommendation

I think that my jumper very closely matches the one in the picture, allowing for different colour choices. What do you think?

The jumper is really comfortable and nice and warm. I definitely think it was worth the money and the effort. I will wear this jumper a lot here in the north west of England.

So, in summary, I recommend this pattern for intermediate crocheters who have a little experience of crochet projects (but you don’t need loads).

And next …

If you are feeling inspired to crochet this jumper then go ahead and download it now. You can look at the recommended yarn while you are there.

If you are looking for a smaller project for now then how about crocheting a granny square bag? Great for using up leftover yarn too.

Or perhaps some cute hearts with those really small bits of yarn?
