0:00
hi in this video i'm going to show you
0:02
how to make a tea bag wallet
0:04
yep super little wallet to carry out
0:06
your tea bags wherever you want to go
0:07
never run short these make a great gift
0:10
idea for someone that loves their tea
0:12
really easy to pop in the post so i'm
0:15
christine of christinescrafts.com and
0:17
this channel is dedicated to crafting
0:19
on a budget so what are you going to
0:22
need to make a tea bag wallet
0:23
well the beauty of this is you only need
0:25
small pieces of fabric it's a great
0:27
scrap busting project
0:29
so from your main fabric cut out two
0:32
seven inches by five inches so that's
0:35
two pieces of those from your main
0:39
also from your main fabric cut out a
0:41
strap piece that is seven
0:47
you're also going to need some pockets
0:48
for the inside which you can do in the
0:50
same material but i'm choosing to use a
0:52
complementary material
0:54
and these should be 7 inches wide by
0:58
for one of them and seven inches wide
1:02
by three inches deep for the other one
1:04
because you want different
1:05
depths of your pockets
1:08
the other thing you're going to need is
1:10
some interfacing to stiffen your wallet
1:13
i use the iron on kind but your piece
1:16
inches by five inches the same as your
1:21
and that's everything you need to cut
1:23
out so the first thing you need to do
1:26
is to get that interfacing and attach it
1:28
to one of your main pieces of fabric
1:30
i use the iron on type so i'm simply
1:34
be very careful to check that you get
1:38
onto the back of your main piece of
1:41
okay so it's the back of the main piece
1:45
when you've applied your heat if it's
1:46
still not stuck quite
1:48
completely everywhere just have another
1:53
whilst we're ironing we're going to take
1:55
our two pocket pieces
1:57
and along the long side the seven inch
1:59
side we're going to turn a small
2:01
hem and i do mean small probably about
2:06
and then turn that hem again to give us
2:09
and get rid of any raw edges
2:12
so that's on the larger pocket piece
2:16
repeat that for the smaller pocket piece
2:20
so that both of them have got a very
2:23
top edge of their pocket
2:27
if you want to you can pin those but i
2:29
think they press they hold well enough
2:32
because you're going to sew along the
2:34
hem that you've just made
2:36
you can do it in matching or contrasting
2:39
i'm using the white all the way through
2:41
so that you can see everything i'm doing
2:44
but just run along the edge of the hem
2:51
make sure you finishes your edges you've
2:58
and you can see that's just going to
2:59
hold that hem in place nicely
3:02
when the pocket is made
3:06
so we're doing it for one pocket we're
3:08
just going to repeat the process exactly
3:11
so that they're both ready to go in
3:14
we're now going to think about the strap
3:16
so take your strap piece and fold it in
3:27
open it back up and then
3:30
fold one edge towards that center
3:34
and press it you're basically splitting
3:38
strap piece into quarters into four
3:43
you'll see i jump sometimes because the
3:46
surface that i'm ironing on can get a
3:51
to say the least so just press carefully
3:59
and then we're going to fold those two
4:02
fold along the central fold
4:06
and just press it again to hold it all
4:10
because this is going to form your strap
4:11
so you don't want any raw edges
4:14
once it's pressed you're happy with it
4:21
so you simply need to place it under
4:24
sew along the edges that you've just
4:28
it's your choice you can sew along both
4:31
to make a certain style of strap but you
4:33
only need to sew along one edge which is
4:38
you can also adjust it as you're going
4:40
along or you could pin it so that
4:42
nothing can move or clip it
4:44
you'll see that as i'm sewing along it i
4:46
just keep adjusting that edge i just
4:48
keep making sure i'm happy with it
4:49
making sure it's sitting right
4:52
so that i get a nice strap
4:58
once you get all the way to the end
5:01
we're going to just sew
5:03
our two ends of our strap together so
5:06
nicely when we sew the whole wallet and
5:08
nothing can move about
5:11
so i'm going to show you what i mean
5:13
once i've trimmed my threads
5:20
and then place the two ends so they sit
5:24
and i'm just going to sew over the end
5:27
now the only thing that matters here is
5:28
that you stay very close to the end
5:30
because you don't want any of those
5:31
stitches to show when you finished your
5:34
just pop it into your machine sew along
5:38
place the other one up against it and
5:42
it should just hold those two in place
5:45
for you when you come to assemble your
5:50
again i will show you it once i take it
5:54
you'll see that i've just reversed back
5:55
to make sure it's all secure
5:57
nothing's going to come undone and i'll
5:59
trim off my threads so they don't end up
6:01
anywhere i don't want them
6:04
so we have a strap all ready to attach
6:10
so i'm going to take the piece of wallet
6:12
the main piece that's got no interfacing
6:15
pasting it right sides up and i'm going
6:18
to place the larger pocket
6:20
on it right sides up so you can see
6:23
it's just going to form the inside of
6:26
now measure a couple of inches down from
6:29
the top of the pocket
6:30
and just mark it i'm going to pin the
6:36
and then move across the wallet and
6:38
measure two inches down again
6:44
then you're going to sew along this line
6:48
now if you prefer you can get a fabric
6:51
and you can draw that line in i'm just
6:55
take it and sew it but this is to stop
6:58
your tea bags disappearing down too deep
7:00
into the pocket so you can't get them
7:03
so just pop it to your machine if you've
7:06
wanted to you've drawn a straight line
7:09
or you're just going to run along the
7:12
there's the bonus effect of holding
7:13
those two together while we carry on
7:20
so we're going to place those down need
7:23
to find that smaller pocket
7:26
and place that lined up at the bottom of
7:28
the wallet and you can see how it's
7:30
going to form those pockets inside your
7:33
and then get the strap and we're going
7:38
on top of the larger pocket above the
7:41
lower pocket the smaller pocket
7:43
now i'm just putting a clip on it to
7:45
hold it in place you can pin it
7:46
it's up to you and take the large
7:49
piece of main fabric that had the
7:53
and place that on top so we've now
7:57
and pin all the way around i choose to
8:01
and at each corner i check everything's
8:03
lined up and then i place it down and
8:05
check everything's lying flat
8:07
and just keep doing that until you're
8:10
get a pin in through where the strap is
8:13
make sure it's all secure
8:15
now at the top you need to leave a gap
8:18
so that you can turn this
8:19
out so at least two inches maybe a
8:25
and i mark it with pins so i don't
8:26
accidentally sew the whole thing
8:28
shut now i'm going to sew
8:31
all the way around except for the hole
8:35
so go to your machine do a little bit of
8:36
reversing make sure it's secure
8:38
get to the corner lift the foot turn 90
8:43
repeat that at each corner you're just
8:46
working your way around the whole wallet
8:49
i tend to have the machine foot along
8:52
the edge of the fabric
8:55
cut your ends off and now it's ready to
8:59
but i recommend so you don't get too
9:01
much bulk that you cut the corner off at
9:04
you want to get close to the stitching
9:06
but not so close that you risk clipping
9:09
the stitches this is just going to
9:11
remove reduce some of the bulk when you
9:16
and now it's time to turn it out so
9:19
you're literally just going to turn it
9:22
and your wallet should appear as if by
9:27
now if you've watched any of my other
9:29
sewing tutorials you'll know the
9:30
chopstick is my favorite tool
9:32
for getting to the corners it's not too
9:35
sharp don't be too rough you don't want
9:37
to poke through your corner
9:40
but poke it into each corner until
9:43
crisp corner or as crisp as you want it
9:47
and then we're going to be in a position
9:51
the wallet i really recommend pressing
9:54
it before you sew it because you'll get
9:55
a much better finish you can take the
9:58
to make sure all your edges are flat and
10:01
and then top sew all the way around
10:05
so it'll top so and make a really neat
10:08
and it'll also sew over that hole you
10:12
so it'll close it up nicely you'll see i
10:15
just started on the side
10:17
it doesn't really matter where you start
10:20
when you get to the end you're going to
10:22
work over where you started and then
10:24
just do a little bit of a reverse
10:27
just to make sure nothing comes undone
10:34
to make sure you've two sides to your
10:35
wallet and all your teabags don't fall
10:39
fold it in half and mark the center of
10:43
again you can mark this with a pen but
10:45
make sure it's a washable pen so it will
10:48
or you can just put your pins there like
10:49
i've done and you're going to sew a
10:53
straight down the middle and it needs to
10:56
be exactly down the middle
10:58
and then your teabags will fit in either
11:00
side in your four little pockets you've
11:03
there's nothing to stop you're making
11:04
one of these bigger putting more pockets
11:07
i just think this is a nice little size
11:12
so there you go we're nearly finished at
11:14
this point i recommend you put in some
11:16
tea bags to give it a bit of bulk
11:18
so you can see how it's going to be
11:21
as you can see i'm very much a fruit tea
11:26
and then fold it short put your lead tab
11:30
and see where your button needs to go
11:34
mark where the button needs to go you
11:36
can take your teabags back
11:38
out and you're going to sew the button
11:39
on so you want to work from the front
11:44
nice little stitches a little stitch
11:46
then through the button
11:48
and you want to make sure you do not sew
11:50
through either of your pockets inside
11:53
it's really important that you do nice
11:55
little stitches that only go through
11:57
that top surface of fabric and
12:00
that'll be strong enough to hold it
12:01
remember you did make it stronger with
12:04
because you don't want to see these
12:06
stitches on the inside and you don't
12:08
want them in your pockets
12:10
so if you need to put your fingers
12:12
inside the pocket inside to make sure
12:15
you can't put the needle through
12:16
accidentally see i've just checked the
12:20
just keep checking or keep your fingers
12:24
then once you're happy finish off
12:27
and then cut off your thread and there
12:31
you've completed your little teabag
12:34
you might find it feels a little loose
12:39
it'll be great once you get them back in
12:42
so good luck with your tea bag wallet
12:45
and i hope you enjoy it and enjoy having
12:47
your tea with you whenever you need it
12:49
or i hope the people you give it to
12:53
so please remember to give me a thumbs
