Hi, in this video we're going to do some Cathedral Window patchwork
0:03
As you can see, I've made cushions, but you can make absolutely anything you like
0:08
We're going to do it on the machine, but you can also do it by hand if you'd like to do some slow sewing
0:13
So what you're going to need are some squares. Now these can be any size
0:17
Now I'm doing five inches by five inches. I often do four inches by four inches for cushions
0:24
And you're going to need four of whatever colour you're going to wrap round
0:29
four for whatever's going to be the background, and then one for your center of each block
0:35
Now, the one in the center is the one that has to be a different pattern. Your others could all be the same pattern if you wanted to
0:41
so you could have eight plain ones and one patterned one. I've just chosen to do the two different types as well as the center one
0:49
Now, whatever fabric you're using for wrapping around the center, making those curves
0:54
you need to fold those four in half and press them. So you're turning those squares into triangles
1:02
And once you've got them, or I seem to have five, that's because I'm making a few blocks
1:07
you can start building your patchwork. So take one of your big background squares
1:13
I say big, they're all the same size. And place one of your triangles on so that the edges match up
1:20
Place another of your triangles on, so the edges still match up
1:25
And then put another background square on. Now this time you want to make
1:28
make sure it's face down. So you're making a sandwich and the right side
1:33
of the outside bits, the background pieces, are going to be facing inwards And just pin or clip along one of those edges So you trapping all the layers of fabric And if it moved like mine had just adjust it
1:49
It's really important they're nicely lined up. Because what you're next going to do is sew along that side
1:54
be it by hand or machine. So we're going to pop over to the machine
2:00
and you're going to ask me now about the seam allowance. Well, I'm using quarter of an inch
2:05
But to be honest, it doesn't matter so long as you're consistent. as long as you're consistent throughout your project
2:10
So do a little reverse at the beginning and then just run along that side until you get to the other end and you're going to do a little reverse again
2:19
So if your hand sewing, you're just doing a little back stitch along there. So long as it's nice and secure
2:27
It's up to you. And then press that seam open. So it lies nice and flat
2:35
And then you'll see that. that's what you've made. Make another one identical because you need two of those to make one block
2:47
So what we're going to do is attach those two together. Now what we're trying to make is something that looks like that and that must look familiar
2:54
to you. So put them together right sides facing so that the triangles lie directly on top of each other
3:03
And then where they meet along those triangle edges. going to pin and then sew Make sure you line up the seams and make sure you capture all those edges in So take your time and get them all so they lying flat and they all going to get captured nicely And then it back to the machine to sew along that seam Now I opened it up because you can check that you doing it right Once again you need to make sure it a nice quarter inch seam or whatever seam allowance you using
3:35
A little reverse at the beginning and then off you go. Where it's getting a little bit thick in the middle, just take your time
3:46
It's not so thick unless you're using a very thick material. And to be honest, you better using a craft cotton
3:51
fabric for this project and then press that seam open and you've now got your block
4:00
All we need to do is add the middle square. So place it exactly in the middle so that the corners line up and then we're going to curl
4:09
each edge over and pin it in place. So just start with one and you can see that curve forming and just pin it right in the middle
4:20
in the middle of the piece you've folded over. And then what I recommend you do is repeat that for all of the edges of the square
4:33
So you can make sure everything's lying flat and everything's just right
4:39
So we've done the two sides and then just keep going and do the other two
4:46
And then you've got your shape. Make sure everything's flat and you're happy
4:50
and then you need to pin those corners. What you're trying to make sure is that you've covered all the raw edges and that they're nice and secured down
5:02
So just make sure no raw edges left If you enjoying this video please give it a thumbs up so it spreads to more people And just keep working your way round
5:15
And then it'll be time to sew this down. And I'm not going to show you on the machine, mainly because I forgot to film it
5:22
I really need to wake up more. And what you're going to do is just sew around those curved edges you've made
5:30
So what you're going to do is make sure you're just so nice and close to that curved edge
5:35
If you're sewing by hand, you're going to want to use a little ladder stitch just so that it's nice and invisible
5:41
You might call it a slip stitch. If you're sewing on the machine, just so close to that curved edge
5:47
And as you get to each point, needle in, lift the foot and turn and go back
5:53
So it should look like this. And now you've got a block
5:59
What you want to do is make some more. And if you're making a lot of them, you'll find you can batch make
6:04
them. I've just made four here and you can lay them out into whatever design you like
6:11
You could do them all with the same fabric. You can do different pieces of fabric, different
6:16
squares. This is really creative this craft. So make it however you like and you can see I've
6:22
put four together there. And then you get that nice circle in the middle and you can go on and
6:27
create a cushion, a quilt, whatever you want. So here are a couple of cushions that I made
6:32
quite a while ago actually and you'll see I've also sewn buttons on to embellish
6:36
but I've used completely white for the background and then just a coloured square in the middle
6:41
and the same with this one so good luck with your cathedral window patchwork and please leave me
6:47
in comments below what you're going to make with yours and enjoy
