0:00
hi in this video i'm going to show you
0:02
how to make your own fabric cards
0:04
as you can see they can be really bright
0:07
and you can sew them with lots of
0:09
different stitches you can have lots of
0:10
different effects it can be a simple
0:12
stripe or you could go for lots of
0:15
here are three different ones i've made
0:17
all with the same sort of stripey design
0:19
lots of different stitches they're great
0:21
for using up those scraps you've got
0:23
left over from other projects
0:25
i'm christine of christinescrafts.com
0:27
and this channel is all about crafting
0:30
so let's use up those scraps of fabric
0:33
you're going to need a card
0:34
now you could just use some ordinary
0:36
card and cut your own cards and fold
0:38
or you could buy cards for crafting
0:41
and then you want some fabric now you'll
0:43
see here i've got lots of different
0:45
little bits and pieces
0:46
and that's what this project is perfect
0:48
for using up those bits you've got left
0:50
over from something else
0:52
these are just craft cottons you could
0:54
use whatever you like
0:56
so you saw i'd got that small rectangle
0:58
i'm just going to cut it
1:00
into two pieces because that's what i've
1:02
got in my mind for my design
1:04
you'll notice i'm using a self-healing
1:06
mat and a rotary cutter
1:08
don't worry you can just use a pair of
1:09
scissors there's nothing wrong with that
1:12
you can have nice perfect straight lines
1:14
you could have wavy lines you can do
1:15
exactly what you want this is your
1:17
design so you can see as i've cut two
1:20
out i'm starting to lay them on the card
1:21
and think about what i'm doing
1:23
so i know what to cut out next so i have
1:27
i'm going to cut a slightly wider strip
1:30
and because i feel that's going to be
1:34
for this design so just keep cutting
1:38
or shapes you like if you want to be
1:40
really adventurous you could cut out
1:42
circles or indeed any other shape you
1:45
just remember that you are going to have
1:47
to sew around these shapes so the more
1:49
complicated it is the more tricky the
1:52
so i'm going to lay it all out again
1:55
and see what i think yep it's coming to
1:58
what i want and i've got that other
1:59
strip up there so i need one more strip
2:02
and i'm going to use the other fabric
2:05
i'm going to do all my sewing on the
2:08
if you're very patient you could do
2:12
but i do think you'd have to be quite
2:13
patient um and i'm also going to draw
2:16
your attention while i cut this one out
2:18
to the fact that when you sew on your
2:20
sewing machine through
2:21
card it blunts your needle so you may
2:24
want to make sure you're using an old
2:26
and that you take it out afterwards and
2:28
keep it purely for making your cards
2:30
or any other sewing that you do on paper
2:33
so once you've got all the bits just
2:35
make sure you have got enough to cover
2:37
your card and it's going to do what you
2:40
you can see i'm doing that here
2:44
and then it's time to formalize the
2:47
and then start sewing these really are
2:50
super quick and easy to make
2:52
so just lay it out don't worry about the
2:54
fact it's going over the back of the
2:55
card you're not going to sew it on there
2:58
we can easily trim off all our extra
3:01
your strips can be as long as you like
3:03
you just don't want them too long or
3:04
you're wasting fabric
3:06
it won't be a problem you're going to
3:09
so as you can see a bit of wiggling it
3:13
i actually feel that section is just far
3:16
too wide so let's have a rethink
3:19
i don't want to waste the pieces i've
3:20
cut in case i have cut them a little bit
3:22
too narrow maybe i didn't plan this as
3:24
well as i should have done
3:25
let's see if we can turn them around and
3:27
make things look a little better have to
3:32
be careful to make sure i don't overlap
3:33
too much over that pink
3:36
and yeah i think that's going to look
3:39
so now it's time to start sewing so the
3:42
first thing i'm going to do is take my
3:44
and the next strip down i'm going to
3:49
and make sure they're exactly where i
3:50
want them and then i'm going to place it
3:54
so that i start at the fold
3:58
now i'm going to use a straightforward
4:01
if you've got fancy embroidery stitches
4:03
on your machine feel free to use them it
4:06
but a simple zigzag is all you need so
4:08
if you've got a simple zigzag machine
4:11
that is all you need to have do a little
4:14
at the beginning to make sure that it
4:17
and then off you go and sew straight
4:19
along that join between the two pieces
4:22
it'll hold the two pieces together it'll
4:27
and it'll keep it looking really smart
4:30
just work your way along
4:34
when you get to the other end you're
4:36
going to do a little reverse again
4:44
and that's it your two pieces of fabric
4:47
i know they're not sewn on around the
4:48
other edges don't worry about that we'll
4:51
but they are now attached to your card
4:54
you need to be really careful to make
4:56
sew them onto the back of the card as
4:59
now you'll see as we move along that one
5:01
of my seams i did go a little bit too
5:03
far and it's a little bit messy but it
5:05
won't stop me giving this card away and
5:08
people love to receive snail mail and if
5:10
you've made it it's even better
5:13
so as you can see i've got a lovely
5:16
all held in place so now i need to take
5:18
the next piece of fabric
5:21
and lay that on where you want it to go
5:23
remember this time when you're laying
5:25
it's permanent so be really happy before
5:27
you take it to the machine
5:30
once you're happy it's back to the
5:34
and sew it in exactly the same way just
5:38
careful not to go beyond that fold
5:43
and now you've got all three sewn on so
5:48
i'm going to lay that bottom one on and
5:51
i'm going to make sure
5:52
it covers some of that decorated fabric
5:55
there the the pretty print
5:57
so that they're they look better to me
6:02
and then sew that one in exactly the
6:06
now obviously if you've got 10 strips
6:08
you keep doing this until you've got all
6:10
if you've done fancy shapes you then add
6:13
it's entirely up to you but once you're
6:16
happy your front of your card's finished
6:18
we're going to trim off the excess
6:20
fabric so turn it over
6:23
and trim off anything you can see around
6:26
the edge of your card
6:27
now again i'm going to use the rotary
6:29
cutter but you can use
6:30
a pair of scissors just take your time
6:34
a rotary cutter is obviously easier
6:36
because you can place your ruler along
6:39
run your roti cutter along and that's it
6:44
and repeat for the other two sides
6:49
your fabric's still not going to be
6:50
attached around the edge of the card
6:53
but it is now the size of the card now
6:56
there's one more edge we need to worry
6:58
so you're going to have to fold your
7:01
and cut along that edge and this is
7:03
where you'll see if you sew a little bit
7:05
far you end up with a little bit onto
7:11
okay so now we're just going to sew all
7:13
the way around the edge
7:14
again it's up to you what stitch i've
7:16
stuck with the same zigzag so it all
7:19
just start on one side and
7:23
set yourself going now i've decided to
7:26
right to the edge so it just goes over
7:28
the edge of the card so it'll minimize
7:31
if you want a little bit of a fray on
7:33
your cards a little bit of a rough and
7:35
then don't take your stitches right to
7:37
the edge and then your fabric will be
7:39
able to fray a little bit
7:40
on the edges when you get to the corner
7:44
simply make sure your needle is in
7:48
lift the foot and turn through 90
7:51
and then sew along the other side
7:55
and just keep doing that at every corner
7:59
until you've worked your way all the way
8:03
and you'll come back to where you
8:04
started make sure you overlap the
8:06
stitches you did at the beginning
8:11
and do a little bit of a reverse and
8:17
you can clearly see the little bit where
8:20
so there you have it that's how to make
8:22
your cards you can see the three i've
8:25
um all very very similar
8:29
just different shapes different colors
8:32
probably suitable for different events
8:34
see i've sewn all the way around looks
8:38
this one the little embroidery stitch
8:41
got the machine to do it but it is a
8:43
little embroidery stitch
8:44
and you're probably thinking by now but
8:46
i can see all the stitches on the inside
8:49
well yes you can doesn't bother me i'm
8:52
quite happy to leave them there i think
8:54
really pretty but if they do bother you
8:56
simply cut out a piece of card that's
8:59
of the inside of your card stick it on
9:02
and no one will ever see your stitches
9:04
so good luck with your fabric cards i
9:06
hope you've enjoyed watching this
