In this video I'm going to show you how to make your own easy DIY hair towel wrap
0:04
They're great for your hair because you don't have to rub it so you don't do any damage and they're so easy to make
0:10
So all you're going to need is some toweling or some other absorbent material
0:15
You could even use old t-shirts. I recommend an old towel or like I'm using an old toweling robe
0:21
And you're going to want some elastic. Now I'm not going to specify a particular elastic
0:25
Use whatever you've got but you just want something that's quite stretchy. Not something that's like an inch or two inches thick
0:31
And you're going to want the pattern that I've got for free for you
0:36
The link's on the screen and it's also in the description below
0:40
Or you could make your own when you see the shape of it shortly and I'll give you some more dimensions
0:45
So you can go and get that and you're also going to need a button
0:49
It doesn't matter what size because you're going to cut your elastic to fit it
0:53
Okay, so that's everything you need. And obviously your basic sewing supplies
0:58
So assuming you've been and got the pattern, simply cut out all the pieces ready to assemble them
1:06
Now if you've printed off on something other than A4, you may find yours are slightly smaller
1:11
Don't worry about it. I did design this pattern to fit my head which is really quite large
1:17
So once you've printed them and cut them out, you're going to assemble them
1:21
So basically you're going to put them all together so that they look like that shape that you want to end up with
1:28
But you need to overlap them slightly. Now what I did was I overlapped them by about half an inch, a centimetre, that sort of amount
1:39
There's nothing precise here. And I ended up with a shape that was 27 inches long and 12 inches high
1:47
Now that fits my large head. So it's up to you if you want to scale it down or indeed up
1:55
But that does make a nice big wrap that is nice and comfortable and doesn't pull tight
2:01
Try and cut the circulation off. So once you've assembled it, it's time to cut out your fabric
2:06
So whatever you're using, you need to make a pair of that shape
2:11
So you're going to cut two out. Now if your pattern has a right and a wrong side, you're going to end up putting them together so that the right sides are together
2:21
If you're using toweling like me, it probably hasn't got a right and a wrong side so you don't have to worry
2:26
You'll see I'm just cutting out one and then I will cut out another, which I'm not going to show you
2:31
Just because mine's out of a robe and I have to get it out of where I can and save as much as I can for my other projects
2:38
Which if you look in the description below, you'll find some of my other projects out of this toweling robe
2:43
So once you've got two and notice you cut them out exactly on the pattern, the seam allowance is already allowed for
2:51
You're going to pin the two shapes together. So remember that if you've got a right and a wrong side, you've got the right sides together
3:00
And basically for all of this, we're going to use a half inch seam allowance
3:06
So you want to put your pins half an inch in. And once you've done all that curved edge, we're going to come to the short straight edge
3:14
Now what we need to do is trap your elastic in there. So the first thing to do is to cut a length of elastic
3:20
Now it doesn't matter if you cut it too long, just don't cut it too short
3:24
So you can see that I'm just testing it around my button and then allowing a whole load more elastic to go through my seam
3:32
You don't want to be struggling, you want a lot of elastic to go through that seam. So you can see I've probably cut mine about two and a half inches
3:39
But just check it around your button and make sure there's plenty
3:45
And then you want to take that elastic loop and put it inside your fabric
3:51
So form a loop and make sure the loop goes inside. And that the two ends are comfortably trapped in that seam
4:01
So you can see them poking out. A clip. Really good idea here to stop your elastic escaping
4:08
But I've just used a pin here. And then it's really important that you just flick through and check that loop
4:15
Check you've got a loop and also check the size of it
4:19
Now I can see by eye that mine's a little bit too big. So I'm just going to pull some more elastic through
4:25
And then it's a really good idea to check it with the button
4:32
And your button wants to pass through easily. But not so easily it's just going to come straight back out again
4:38
You do want your elastic to have to do a little bit of stretching. So again I'm pulling a bit more through
4:45
Check it again and then once you're really happy with it and you're sure that loop's going to be nice and easy for you to use
4:52
but not so loose that the button just flies back through. You're ready to take it over to the machine
4:58
And you're going to sew all the way along the curved edge that you've done
5:03
and along that straight edge. And you're going to stick with your half inch seam allowance
5:10
So start at one end. Now I've started at the wider end because I think that's easier
5:15
And simply sew half an inch or an inch. And then a bit of reverse just to secure those ends so nothing comes unraveled
5:27
And then you're going to just work your way round. And make sure that you stick with your half inch seam allowance
5:36
and that you don't catch your pins in. And just keep going along there
5:43
And you're going to sew all the way along the curved edge until you get to half an inch from the end
5:50
And then we need to turn and go down the straight short edge
5:55
So make sure that your needle is in right through your fabric
6:00
Lift the foot and turn the whole thing so that you're heading off down that straight section
6:07
Put your foot back down and then you're going to sew straight along right to the edge
6:14
And I recommend that when you get to that far edge you reverse all the way back
6:23
And then come back down to that bottom edge. So what you're doing is sewing that elastic in three times
6:29
and making sure it's really secure. Because that's where the most strain is going to be when you're using this towel wrap
6:38
So then cut off your threads and the next step. So as you can see that's sewn
6:46
Got a nice seam. If you don't like having a seam stuck up inside
6:50
you could flatten it down and do a row of top stitching to hold it in place
6:54
I didn't. But you could do if that suits you. Or maybe if you're giving it as a gift and you want to make it super special
7:02
So then we need to deal with this raw edge along the bottom. So just set yourself going part way along
7:08
And if you're using a thick towelling like I am just do a single hem half an inch
7:14
If you're using a thinner fabric, for example an old t-shirt you might be better doing a little double hem
7:20
So do quarter of an inch and then quarter of an inch. None of these measurements are crucial
7:25
because it's going to just fit your head anyway. Now just be careful when you get to the ends where you've got those seams
7:33
it does get a little bit thick. So just take your time to make sure you get it turned up the right amount
7:40
and that it sits nicely. And then you just carry on all the way around
7:47
Pin it. It's up to you if you want to tack it but I think really you'll probably be alright just pinning it all in place
7:55
Just make sure it's all the same size. I don't measure. You can do if you want
8:00
I just do it by eye. Again when you get to the thick seam just be careful
8:05
And then you should get back to where you started and it should lie flat and look nice
8:13
So then once you're happy all that's done and you've got a nice edge it's back to the machine to sew all the way around it
8:20
So I recommend starting sort of part way along one side because you don't want to be messing about over where your seams are
8:26
when you come to tidy your ends up. And I personally just set off and sew along that hem
8:33
You can do a little reverse if you want to but you don't need to because you're going to loop all the way around
8:39
and then you're going to go over the stitching that you started with
8:45
So just feed it carefully through. Again when you get to those seams it's quite thick
8:50
It's really quite bulky. You should just be careful. If you have any trouble you can always turn the machine by hand
8:56
to get yourself through it. And keep going. You can see I'm just taking the pins out as I go
9:04
And eventually when you've gone over this other seam you're going to come back to where you started
9:11
So make sure that what you do is sew over the stitches
9:16
from where you started so that you secure those and they don't come unraveled
9:22
And then once you've got those secured a little reverse, back forwards and you're done
9:33
So now you have got your basic shape for your hair towel wrap
9:39
you just can't secure it to your head yet. So turn it the right way out
9:44
and you'll see your elastic at the short end. You've got that loop
9:49
So double checking my button again. If there'd been a problem I might have just picked another button out of my stash
9:57
So all you're going to do is sew that button on the wider end
10:01
So you're going to sew it near the bottom near the double hem or single hem that you've just sewn
10:06
and you want a double thread on your needle and a knot on the end and push it through that inner seam
10:13
Do a few stitches just to secure it. You could even put the needle through the loop
10:17
and make it more secure. And then you bring the needle through onto the right side
10:25
and up through your button. So you're coming up through one hole
10:30
back down through the other and back down through the wrap. And then you're just going to keep repeating that
10:40
through those two holes until you're happy it's nice and secure. If you've got a button with four holes
10:45
you're going to do it with the two holes and then do it with the other two holes
10:50
Once you're happy it's secure you're just going to finish off on the wrong side
10:54
using that seam again. So just do a little stitch and then put your needle through the loop of thread
11:02
pull it tight. Repeat as many times as you like and you've made it secure
11:08
So now all you need to do is use it. So simply place it on your head
11:15
tuck all your hair in wrap your hair in bring the loop over
11:21
and hook it over the button and your hair will dry nicely while you're doing something else
11:25
