0:00
hi in this video i'm going to show you
0:02
how to make double-sided fabric napkins
0:04
really professional with a nice little
0:06
top stitch around the edge
0:08
when you fold them they look great
0:09
because you've got the same fabric on
0:12
or how about using two different fabrics
0:16
for a more exciting effect perhaps it
0:18
matches your decor or perhaps it matches
0:21
plates and here's another example of two
0:24
very different fabrics
0:26
dark one and a light one so i'm
0:29
christine of christiescrafts.com and
0:31
this channel is dedicating to crafting
0:34
so let's get started making your fabric
0:38
first thing you're going to need to do
0:39
is choose your fabric and then you're
0:40
going to cut it out the size you want
0:43
now you can make your napkins lots of
0:44
different sizes it's entirely up to you
0:47
i'm going to make mine 16 inches square
0:50
so i'm cutting my fabric out 17 inches
0:55
and using a half inch seam allowance
0:58
you can see i'm using a self-healing mat
1:01
and a rotary cutter to get really good
1:03
squares there's nothing wrong with using
1:06
a ruler and scissors just take your time
1:09
measure accurately and get good squares
1:12
so that they line up well
1:14
and you get the napkins with the
1:15
professional finish you're hoping for
1:18
so as you can see i'm lining up to get
1:20
my 17 inches the other way
1:22
so it's a perfect square and then you
1:25
need to repeat so that you've got two of
1:28
so we're going to sew those together to
1:30
make the double-sided napkins
1:34
as you can see making sure it's lined up
1:38
and get your two squares and that's it
1:42
that's everything you need to cut out
1:43
that's all the fabric you need
1:46
two squares so the next thing you need
1:50
is look at your two squares and make
1:53
sure you're going to show them the right
1:56
as you can see mine has got a pattern so
1:58
there is a right and the wrong way up
2:00
so just check you get the patterns the
2:03
or the opposite way if you want to be
2:05
exciting but just make sure you're
2:07
getting them how you want them
2:09
and then place your two squares together
2:13
line them up so that they're exactly
2:15
matching and then either pin
2:18
or clip them together so just work your
2:20
way around making sure it still lies
2:24
and you're going to end up with a nice
2:26
flat napkin at the end
2:29
once you've got all the way around you
2:30
need to think about the fact that when
2:33
we need to turn this out so we need to
2:35
leave a gap on one side so you want to
2:37
mark that in some way
2:39
i'm going to use the larger clip so it's
2:41
obvious which part i'm going to leave
2:47
you could use your pins in a different
2:49
direction or mark it with a little
2:52
but that gap i am not going to sew so
2:55
then it's over to your sewing machine
2:56
or if you're sewing by hand just set off
3:01
get to one of your markers that you're
3:05
and set off make sure you've got your
3:08
seam allowance set to the right position
3:11
and then sew a little way do a reverse
3:14
so that your stitches don't come undone
3:16
and then set off along that side you'll
3:19
see that i've used the middle of one
3:21
side it's the best place to turn it
3:23
so keep working your way along until you
3:25
get right to the corner
3:27
when you get to the corner make sure
3:29
your needles properly in through the
3:32
and then lift your foot and turn through
3:37
put the foot down and set off again
3:40
and you're going to do that at each
3:42
corner as you come to it
3:44
and then you're just going to work your
3:46
way all the way around
3:49
make sure you keep that seam allowance
3:52
make sure you turn well at each corner
3:54
so you get a nice corner on your napkin
3:59
keep going until you get back round
4:02
to the other marker for the little bit
4:10
just come up to the last corner here
4:16
and then right round to that other
4:20
and sew up to it and then do a little
4:24
so that the stitches don't come undone
4:30
check that gap's wide enough don't make
4:32
it so tight you can't turn your napkin
4:34
through there's no benefit to that
4:36
and then once you're happy and you've
4:38
done your little reverse
4:40
you're going to take it away from the
4:44
and back over to your table
4:47
so before you think about turning it out
4:49
go to each corner in turn
4:51
and clip the corner off this removes
4:54
some of the bulk to give you a better
4:56
be careful to go quite near the stitches
5:00
that you cut the stitches otherwise
5:02
you're going to end up with a hole in
5:06
so just take care do all four
5:10
and then it's time to turn it through so
5:12
you've got your hole there
5:14
just turn it all through you can see i'm
5:17
just pushing it all through
5:19
once you've got it all through it's time
5:21
to think about the corners
5:23
and you're going to want something to
5:24
poke in there that's not too sharp
5:26
but will give you a nice corner i tend
5:31
and you're just going to ease it gently
5:32
into the corner don't be too rough
5:34
because you could rip your stitches
5:36
sometimes rubbing it between your
5:37
fingers also helps it to just flatten
5:40
out and get into that corner
5:42
so repeat that for all your corners
5:46
and then you're going to be ready to
5:49
your napkin before you think about top
5:52
which is also incidentally going to
5:54
close that hole that you left
5:56
you need to press your napkin so i'm
5:58
going to show you why
6:00
you're going to work along each edge and
6:02
you're going to realize that it doesn't
6:04
naturally open up to the seam so you
6:07
just need to keep going and
6:09
pull everything back pull that seam out
6:12
and press it flat and work your way
6:15
around the entire napkin like that so
6:19
straight square edges like you were
6:23
means you'll end up with a more
6:24
professional napkin at the end
6:27
and then give the whole thing a quick
6:28
press and you're ready to sew
6:33
just going to sew a top stitch all the
6:36
so it's back to the machine pick part
6:40
put your foot down and set off we don't
6:43
need to reverse because we're going to
6:44
all the way around and come back to here
6:47
it's up to you how close to the edge you
6:49
do top stitch lots of people have
6:51
different opinions some people do two
6:54
i tend to line mine up with the edge of
6:56
the zipper foot and it
6:58
keeps it nice and easy to keep straight
7:00
as before when you get to the corner
7:03
needle down lift the zipper foot turn it
7:06
zip your foot back down and away you go
7:10
if you want to do two rows that's up to
7:13
you you just repeat this process
7:15
i'm just doing one row of top stitching
7:18
it fastens up that hole i left and it
7:20
gives a nice professional finish
7:23
so when you get back to where you
7:24
started make sure you sew over where you
7:26
started to secure those stitches
7:28
and do a little reverse
7:32
and then that's it your napkin is
7:33
finished you simply press it
7:36
and then it's ready for you to use
7:39
so how about thinking how you're going
7:41
to present your napkins
7:43
what you can do is simply fold them and
7:45
place them on the table
7:46
or how about a bit of napkin folding as
7:49
you can see here there's one
7:50
shaped like an arrowhead and one like a
7:54
and if you look at the videos on the
7:56
screen now they will show you how to do
7:58
both of those and they're really quick
8:01
so thank you for watching please give me
8:03
a thumbs up below and leave me any
8:05
