hi and welcome to christinescrafts.com
0:03
today i'm going to show you how to
0:04
upcycle your cardboard boxes using
0:06
fabric
0:07
so we're going to turn those ordinary
0:09
delivery boxes into
0:10
fabulous looking pretty storage
0:14
okay so remember to subscribe below and
0:16
ding the bell so you know when all my
0:18
videos appear
0:19
and today this is the sort of thing
0:20
we're gonna do obviously
0:22
what you make depends on the size of
0:24
your box we're gonna cover it
0:26
we're gonna line it if you want to
0:27
that's optional i know you can use it
0:29
for whatever
0:30
mine clearly is full of vintage buttons
0:33
so to start with you're going to need a
0:35
box it doesn't matter what size it
0:37
depends what you want to put in it or
0:38
what box you've got available
0:41
you're then going to need some sort of
0:43
glue i've used fabric glue for this box
0:45
but i've also been known to use spray
0:47
glue to do them so it's up to you
0:48
whatever you've got
0:50
some scissors a ruler and some fabric
0:53
now i've got two different ones one for
0:55
the outside and one for lining the box
0:58
it's entirely up to you they're just
1:00
ordinary cotton
1:01
again you could try different fabrics so
1:04
i want to make sure my box is nice and
1:06
tidy and ready for covering
1:07
so i've decided to cut all the flaps off
1:10
you could fold them in but they might be
1:12
a little bit annoying so
1:13
i just decided to cut mine off okay
1:17
and there i've got it so place your
1:19
material down
1:21
put your box on it and just check that
1:24
all the way around your fabric does
1:26
reach
1:26
up over the sides of the box and overlap
1:28
into the top
1:30
and then start measuring okay so what
1:33
i've done
1:33
is i've measured how tall my box is
1:36
and then i've added on two inches and
1:39
i'm marking it clearly
1:41
i'm going to do that all the way around
1:43
the box now
1:44
because i'm using one corner of my
1:46
fabric i just measured it to the edge
1:48
and place the box so i'm
1:49
drawing two sides of my rectangle you
1:52
may need to draw all four
1:54
but just draw them on any pen will do
1:57
you're never going to see these lines so
1:59
don't worry
2:00
you can use a permanent marker if you
2:02
like no one will ever see it i'm just
2:03
using a biro
2:06
once you've got a nice clear rectangle
2:09
around your box
2:10
you just need to cut it out
2:13
hence the sharp scissors i have my own
2:17
dress making scissors
2:18
which to be brutally honest i hide in my
2:21
house so no one cuts anything else with
2:23
them
2:23
i'm sure i'm not the only person that
2:25
has to do that
2:28
so keep cutting out
2:40
and now make sure your fabric's flat
2:42
your box is exactly the middle
2:44
so just check all your measurements make
2:46
sure it's in the right place you can now
2:48
glue it down if you want to
2:49
but i haven't done you're going to take
2:51
your scissors
2:53
and in turn you're going to cut in from
2:56
each corner to the box
2:58
now i've left about half an inch not cut
3:01
i didn't cut
3:01
right up to the box corner you need to
3:04
do this for
3:05
all four and then you'll be ready to
3:08
start gluing your fabric to your box
3:11
just cut in right at the corner
3:15
to the corner of the box if you're
3:18
worried about doing it you could always
3:19
put a ruler on and draw a line first
3:21
as you can see i didn't bother and there
3:24
you go
3:26
so the first thing you need to do is
3:29
apply some glue to one of your longer
3:30
sides if you've got a square box
3:32
obviously it doesn't matter which side
3:33
you go for but for me i've got a
3:35
rectangular box so one of my longer
3:37
sides
3:38
i'm covering it in glue because of the
3:40
type of glue i'm using i've just dotted
3:42
it around
3:43
and then spread it around with a craft
3:45
stick
3:46
you can use your finger but boy do you
3:48
get gluey
3:50
so to make sure you've got plenty make
3:53
sure it's covered
3:55
and as you can see i'm spreading it to
3:57
make sure it goes to the edges as well
4:00
and then if you didn't glue your box
4:01
down recheck it
4:03
make sure it's in the middle and fold
4:06
that side up
4:07
now make sure you get a nice smooth side
4:12
and then worry about the edges so you
4:15
can see i've pulled the edge tight
4:17
and again i'm smoothing all the time
4:20
make sure
4:20
you've got it smoothed down against the
4:22
box particularly on the outside where
4:24
you're going to really see it through
4:26
the other fabric if you don't
4:28
you'll see me keep wiping my fingers
4:31
it's just because i'm getting them gluey
4:32
because obviously once i start handling
4:35
the fabric that's covered in glue
4:37
i get some on my hands and all i'm going
4:40
to do now
4:40
is repeat for the other side so you'll
4:43
end up with both
4:44
long sides glued onto your box
5:04
so it's a repeat of the other side fold
5:06
it up
5:08
take the edges around make sure that
5:11
side
5:11
smooth and then bring the edges right up
5:14
and round into the box
5:18
smooth them down
5:22
same on this side smooth it down
5:27
and well done two sides of the box
5:28
covered
5:31
now make sure you're happy with it and
5:34
then worry about one of the smaller
5:35
sides
5:36
so first of all just glue the triangular
5:39
shape
5:39
at either side because we're going to
5:42
fold those
5:43
in so that we get a nice rectangle for
5:46
folding up the box
5:48
it'll make sense in a moment so fold in
5:51
one rectangle
5:52
so you basically get a straight line
5:54
from the box along your piece of fabric
5:56
do the same at the other side if you
5:58
have any little pointy bits sticking out
6:00
just fold them in
6:02
now you'll see i tried it wasn't happy
6:04
with it no still too wide
6:06
i'm going to refold
6:10
once you're happy with it and you know
6:13
it's going to fold up nicely and just
6:14
fold into the box
6:16
add some glue make sure you spread your
6:19
glue right to the edges because
6:20
otherwise you'll have an edge that could
6:22
easily get caught and pulled up
6:24
so you'll see i'm spreading that glue
6:26
and making sure it's covering the whole
6:28
thing
6:28
the whole surface and then fold it up
6:32
smooth it down fold it inside the box
6:35
smooth that down and that's completed
6:40
excellent now you're going to repeat
6:43
that for the other end
6:44
so once again you're going to glue your
6:46
triangles you'll see me struggling now
6:48
to get glue out of this bottle because
6:50
i'm using it up
6:53
spread the glue out
6:58
and then you're going to think about
6:59
folding them in to get that perfect
7:01
rectangle
7:02
again
7:07
check it yeah quite happy this time see
7:10
i learnt a lot from the first end and so
7:12
will you
7:13
again spread that glue out make sure it
7:16
reaches
7:17
right to the edge
7:23
[Music]
7:28
then fold your fabric up against the box
7:33
and make sure it's nice and secure i
7:35
found a thread i've got that off
7:38
fold it up smooth it all the time
7:45
press it down inside make sure it's all
7:47
secure
7:49
and there's your box if you're happy
7:51
with that you can leave it at that
7:53
if you want to line it you need to cut
7:55
another piece of fabric identical to the
7:57
first one
7:59
and we're going to make a lining so take
8:02
one of your shorter sides
8:03
and just glue the triangles like you did
8:05
before now we're working on the wrong
8:07
side of the fabric here
8:09
fold them in to make those nice ends
8:13
of your box and we're going to do the
8:16
same
8:16
to the other short side
8:20
now as you can see now i've folded some
8:21
over this is all done on the wrong side
8:23
at the moment
8:24
it's important because we're going to
8:25
turn it over shortly
8:28
to glue those triangles and then fold
8:30
them in to make a nice rectangle for
8:32
either
8:33
short end of your box
8:40
and then we've got to work out how to
8:41
make this into a lining
8:43
so what you're going to do is each of
8:46
your
8:47
long sides you're going to take that
8:49
triangle and fold it onto there like
8:51
that and glue it onto there
8:55
and glue it so we're going to turn the
8:57
whole lot over
8:58
because you're now applying glue to the
8:59
right side of your fabric
9:02
just do one triangle at a time
9:06
or you will get very very gluey
9:09
so apply glue to one and then we're
9:12
going to take that rectangle
9:14
and fold it over onto there so it lies
9:16
flat
9:17
and you'll see you're making a little
9:19
point in the bottom the bottom corner of
9:21
your box
9:23
because what we're going to do is form a
9:25
box shape
9:26
okay so we're now going to take
9:31
that other triangle from the other side
9:34
and we're going to glue it to the same
9:36
short side spread your glue out
9:45
and then take that short side and put it
9:47
over onto it again
9:50
got a little triangle you're not happy
9:52
with just tuck it in
9:54
and you formed one end of your lining
9:56
for your box
9:58
you see how we've got little points at
10:00
the bottom
10:01
it's forming a box and all we're going
10:04
to do
10:05
is repeat for the other side so glue one
10:08
of your triangles
10:11
[Music]
10:15
i'd just like to say if you use a fabric
10:17
glue like i've done
10:18
it stays very wet for quite a while so
10:21
your box takes
10:21
ages to dry because you've got the glue
10:23
from the outer fabric and the glue from
10:25
the lining
10:26
so just bear that in mind that you might
10:28
have a while to wait before you can use
10:30
your box
10:30
unless you use something like spray glue
10:32
which is a lot quicker to dry
10:34
so there we go we've got three sides the
10:36
last triangle to do
10:39
[Music]
10:42
spread out your glue and then you're
10:45
going to be
10:46
placing that end on to form the last
10:49
little corner of your
10:50
your lining of your box
10:54
and i'll hold it up try and show you
10:56
you've basically formed a little fabric
10:58
box it's too soft to call a box
11:00
but it's going to slot nicely into your
11:02
other box
11:05
so pick up your lining and just place it
11:08
into your box
11:09
push it down wiggle it about make sure
11:11
you're happy
11:13
and then you're going to start folding
11:14
those top edges over
11:17
fold them all over get it so you think
11:19
it's how you want it to be make it look
11:21
nice
11:23
check you're happy and then start gluing
11:26
so just take one end apply some glue to
11:29
that folded edge
11:32
spread it out and then press it against
11:35
the side of the box where you want it
11:38
once you're happy peg it in place i'm
11:41
using
11:42
cloth pegs or clothespins depending
11:44
where you're from
11:45
great we'll just hold it there while it
11:47
dries stops me pulling it while i'm
11:49
doing the other bits
11:50
just keeps it nice so let's glue this
11:53
other end
11:57
spread it out
12:00
press it on
12:05
you'll notice i'm a little bit down from
12:06
the top of the box just to keep it nice
12:08
and pretty
12:10
all right let's check that side happy
12:12
with it let's apply some glue
12:18
it doesn't matter what you use to clip
12:21
this together
12:22
it's just to hold it there so whilst
12:24
i've used clothes pegs on the end
12:27
i'm going to use some stationery on the
12:29
side so little clips that i normally use
12:31
for holding papers together
12:33
they'll work just as well
12:37
you can see it's coming along nicely so
12:39
let's do the final side
12:44
[Music]
12:49
let's press it on make sure it's smooth
12:51
and we're happy with it if you've got
12:52
some little wrinkles and folds and
12:53
you're happy that's fine i have in there
12:55
i'm not too worried about the lining
12:57
i just think it looks nicer than the
12:59
bare box
13:04
put your clips on and leave it to dry
13:07
box is finished
13:13
so once one was dry it was vintage
13:15
buttons i recently acquired these
13:17
vintage buttons i wanted somewhere to
13:18
store them and that's what the box was
13:20
for
13:21
so place whatever you want into your box
13:25
and enjoy so much more inspiring when
13:27
you come to it than just a plain
13:29
cardboard box that you got something
13:30
through the post in
13:33
so i hope you enjoy your box making
13:36
and that you feel inspired to make some
13:38
pretty boxes
13:45
so thank you for watching i hope you've
13:47
enjoyed it please subscribe below please
13:49
give me a thumbs up
13:51
and ring the bell so you make sure when
13:52
i post another craft video
13:54
so thanks again bye
