Yes, I've upcycled that aerosol lid into these fabulous little pots
0:04
They're great for gift boxes. I mean, who wouldn't want to receive some jewellery in one of these
0:09
And they can last forever on your dressing table. This last one was made over 30 years ago and my mum still has it on her dressing table
0:16
So, at the end I'm also going to show you how to make something to match that
0:20
so hang around till the end and see what that is. So, let's get started and let's make yours
0:27
So, what you're going to need. Well, some sort of lid. All that matters is it's got a flat bottom
0:32
Some glue. I'm using a multi-purpose but you use what you've got. Any trim you want to add
0:38
And you're going to need your fabric. Some main fabric for the outside and a lining fabric
0:42
Doesn't really matter what they are but cotton's work well. You need one piece of thick card and a piece of thin card that bends really easily
0:51
And we can just get started. Oh, and a little bit of stuffing if you want to pad out your lid
0:57
You'll see later on that that's an option and you could just use some old bits of fabric if you like
1:03
So, you've got your pot and all that matters is it's got a flat bottom. So, it doesn't matter what you've taken your lid off or what size it is
1:09
That'll just give you a different size pot. So, get your really thick card and take your pot and just draw around it
1:19
All you're doing is using it as a template really. And just draw exactly around it
1:27
And then cut that circle out. And that's going to form your lid
1:34
So, you just want one of those out of your thick cardboard. So, I'm going to write on lid to avoid any confusion later
1:48
So, then it's time to think about your thin cardboard. And what we're going to do here
1:54
and I hope you'll notice I just use things again and again and again. It's all scraps. It's all using up. It's all about working to a budget
2:01
So, I've actually made these for pretty much free. Virtually nothing. So, this time you're going to draw around your pot three times
2:12
And when you cut them out, you're going to cut slightly differently
2:17
So, one of them you're going to cut exactly on your line
2:22
Just like you did before. And this is going to stick to the base of your pot
2:35
Now, if when you look at it you think actually it's tiny little bit big or it's sticking out or I didn't cut it perfectly
2:41
Just trim it up until you're happy with that to sit on the base
2:46
So, again, I'm going to write on it so I know what it is later
2:52
The next one, cut it out a little bit inside the line
2:55
You want it smaller than the actual pot. So, just keep going around and that's going to go on the lid
3:06
So, if you think it's a little bit close in size, again, just go a little bit smaller
3:11
And then another one you're going to cut out inside the line
3:15
So, I mean, if I had to guess, what would I say
3:20
Maybe an eighth of an inch inside the line and then drop it into the pot
3:25
If it doesn't drop nicely to the bottom, just trim it up a little bit more. And once it drops in, that one's ready
3:35
Again, I'm writing on it. I don't want any problems later. So, you've got all your cardboard pieces except for lining around the edge of your pot
3:44
So, just measure it around the outside. Mine's six and a half inches
3:51
And then we're going to measure how tall it is. Mine's one and three quarters, but we're going to do the line in one and a half inches
3:58
So, you're going to want a piece of your thin card that's, for me, one and a half inches
4:03
So, it's a little bit shorter than the height of your pot. And you want it the circumference of your pot, the distance all the way around
4:11
So, for me, that's six and a half inches. Now, actually, that'll be a little bit too long
4:16
But if you start at that, you can trim it down so it fits nicely in a moment
4:30
So, let's just label that up so I know what it is. And that's all your cardboard pieces
4:38
So, we can put those to one side. I didn't look at the main fabric. So, whatever you're putting on the outside of your pot, that's what we're dealing with now
4:47
So, you're going to use your pot again. And this time, instead of drawing exactly round it
4:53
you're going to draw round it and add half an inch all the way round
4:58
Now, you'll see I don't do this accurately. I just measure half an inch
5:05
usually in four places. And then I'm just going to sketch a line in
5:12
And it really doesn't matter what you're drawing on your fabric with because no one will ever see it
5:18
So, just draw around half an inch away from the pot. And then we're going to repeat that
5:31
But this time, we're going to measure three quarters of an inch away
5:36
Now, these are just to make sure there is plenty of fabric
5:40
to wrap around our card when we come to use it. So, if you've got it slightly bigger or slightly smaller, it's really not going to matter
5:49
But you do want to make sure you've plenty of fabric. So, then cut those circles out
5:59
Put them to one side. And we now need a piece of fabric that's going to cover your pot
6:06
So, if you can think back to measuring round your pot and measuring the height
6:13
we're going to use those for our dimensions. So, you want it the height of your pot plus an inch
6:23
And then you want it the distance all the way round your pot plus an inch
6:29
So, if you've forgotten that was, quick measure, around six and a half inches, and then add an inch on
6:36
This is just going to allow it to wrap and get nice clean edges and everything look great
6:41
So, for me, I'm going to make that seven and a half inches long. Again, your measurements aren't crucial so long as it's big enough
6:52
But if you get too big, you find you get a bit too much bulk. So, cut out that rectangle
6:59
And that's all your pieces for your outer fabric done. So, that's what you should have
7:08
So, then you're lining. And you'll see I'm using some old fabric here that was actually used to line a waistcoat many years ago
7:15
And it was actually my mum that used it, not me. But all you're going to do is take that lining card
7:22
And you're going to cut it so that it's an inch bigger on each dimension
7:27
So, it'll be an inch wider and an inch taller. Again, you can see these dimensions aren't crucial
7:37
You just want plenty so that when you come to wrap your card shortly, there's plenty to wrap around
7:44
And then we're also going to have to deal with those cardboard pieces we've got
7:50
So, each one of those, you're going to place it on your fabric
7:55
And you're going to cut a circle out half an inch bigger all the way around should be sufficient
8:02
And you can see how accurately I'm doing it. I just looked at it and guessed
8:10
If you're not that confident, just draw a circle. Okay, so from our lining, we've got those three pieces
8:27
So, let's start to build. You're going to get that main piece of fabric, that rectangle
8:33
And you're going to wrap it around your pot. So, apply some glue
8:37
I'm using a multi-purpose. You could use a fabric glue. You could use any glue you've got, to be honest
8:42
Just make sure you do it definitely on the edges. And I put some in the middle just to make sure it sticks nicely
8:50
Place your pot so it's about an equal amount top and bottom. And then wrap the fabric round
8:57
Now, we don't want any raw edges. So, lift that raw edge back up and just form a little fold
9:08
And then you're going to get a really nice edge. Wrap the other one round. And again, take it back and form a little fold
9:16
Now, you need to make sure they meet up. You don't want them overlapping. You don't want a gap
9:20
So, just take your time. If it won't stick down properly, not quite enough glue, just add a bit more glue
9:27
And then press that down. Once you're happy, it's all nice and smooth and you've got your edges, just fold the top in
9:38
Now, you've made sure you've plenty of glue on that top edge and just fold it in
9:42
If you haven't got enough glue, just add some more now. And at the bottom, you're going to do the same
9:49
You're just going to fold that edge onto the bottom. And that'll all be covered up shortly
9:55
Now, you might find because it's overlapping, there's not really enough glue
10:00
So, as I said, just add a little bit more in. And then press it down
10:12
And that's your basic pot covered. So, you can see how it's going to be
10:20
Now, I'm going to start covering some of the other pieces. So, take that lining card and you now just need to check that it really does fit
10:29
Now, when I put mine in, it overlaps way too much. You want it just to meet up
10:35
So, just trim a little bit off and try it again. And they should just meet
10:43
And once they do, that's the size you want it. And you're going to stick your lining fabric to it
10:50
See, they just meet up in there. And it already doesn't want to come out
10:57
So, apply some glue just around the edge of your lining fabric
11:03
That'll be enough. You can see I'm getting well down my glue. So, I just have to keep messing about with it and make sure I can get some out
11:12
I hope you're enjoying this video. And if you are, please give me a thumbs up so it spreads to more people
11:17
And keep making your pot. So, wrap your fabric round. You want it nice and tight but, you know, you're not worrying too much about that
11:29
just as long as it's all flat and smooth on the right side. And then, you're just going to have to add some more glue to those ends
11:37
because you've covered a lot of your glue up. And then fold those ends in
11:46
You'll find with most of this, you can just keep working. As one bit dries, you're working on the next bit
11:53
You can just complete this whole project and then use it straight away
12:00
Let's put that to one side. And remember those circles we had of the main fabric
12:10
Take the big one and put it to one side. And the smaller circle, we're going to put on that bottom outer piece that we cut
12:18
So, it's thin cardboard and it's exactly the size of the pot
12:23
So, just put some glue around the edge and fold it over
12:34
Put that to one side to dry once you're happy with it. Now, that main piece is not so simple
12:44
What we're going to do is get a needle and thread and put a knot in the thread
12:49
and we're just going to run a little running stitch all the way around the edge because we're just going to do a simple gather
12:57
Now, you don't need to be a seamstress to do this. It's a really simple in-out running stitch and you're just going all the way around
13:07
And this is how we're going to get that nice padded effect. Once you get back to where you started
13:17
it's time to get your padding, whatever you're using. It really doesn't matter
13:21
You don't need to go out and buy toy filling. You're going to put a little bit under the cardboard and then pull the fabric tight
13:30
See what you think. If you don't like it, you want a bit more or a bit less
13:34
then just open it up and adjust it. You'll see that's what I'm doing here
13:38
Still not happy. A little bit more. And then once you're happy with it, you pull it up tight and fasten it off
13:47
The best way is to just do a little stitch and then put the needle through the loop
13:53
And you'll see I do two just to be sure it'll hold. Cut your thread and that's done
14:02
Now, you're going to repeat that for the other two lining pieces and their circles
14:07
So, you just run a gather all the way around the edge. You add a little bit of filling and add the card, pull it tight, fasten it off
14:20
So, that's your lid. You can see how that's going to work. And then the other one to go in the base
14:24
It's up to you how much padding you put in. I put a little bit less padding in the one that goes in the bottom
14:29
but that's just a personal preference. And then once that's drawn up and fastened off, we're ready to start building
14:41
So, let's put your lid together first. Just take the lining circle and add some glue
14:50
Now, you want your glue quite near the edge, but you don't want it squirting out
14:54
So, you know your glue best. I know I can go quite near the edge with this because it's a very thick glue
14:59
And then place it on the center of the main lid. Press it down
15:06
And I recommend, while it dries, adding a heavy weight. I'm going to use this Giant Reader's Digest book
15:12
It's mainly what I use it for, to be honest, although it is a good plant reference guide
15:17
It's a brilliant weight. Then take your pot and the base that you covered
15:23
And again, apply your glue nicely to the edge, but not so that it's going to squeeze out
15:30
And then you're going to place that onto the pot. Line it up
15:37
Press it down. And a little lighter weight on that one for me. So, once that's dry, you're ready to finish the pot
15:45
We're going to glue that lining in just like that. So, what I recommend is to put the glue inside the pot
15:59
If you put it on the cardboard, you could get it all caught and get glue where you don't want it
16:04
So, just pop it in the pot. Make sure you get some right to the bottom and some near to the top
16:09
But remember, your lining isn't coming right to the top, so you don't want the glue right to the top either
16:16
So, just work your way around until it's all got some glue on it
16:21
And then you can put the base in, but I choose not to. I put the side in first
16:28
Now, I also line where they're going to meet up with where the outer bits of fabric met up
16:34
And then just push it in. Now, make sure you go to the bottom. Make sure you press it onto the sides
16:39
And it should meet up perfectly because you checked. Then I'm going to glue the bottom in
16:45
Now, you could have done this first if you chose to. Just a bit of glue on it, and then press it into the bottom
16:53
And I just say take your time pressing it in the bottom and make sure you work your fingers around the edge
16:58
Your fingernail works brilliantly. Just to get it to tuck under the side lining
17:04
And you can see I'm just giving it quite a bit of effort
17:09
And that's it. You've got a pot. But to be honest, I don't recommend leaving it there
17:14
I think they look a lot better with a bit of decoration, particularly at the bottom
17:19
So, you could consider things like trim, like this little set of flowers
17:25
Ribbon works really well. And I think that's what I'm going to put around the bottom of mine
17:34
So, just cut it to length with a little bit extra so it overlaps slightly
17:38
You don't need a massive overlap, but you do want a little bit. And then just run some glue along it
17:45
And wrap it carefully around. Again, I'd make sure you start with one end where you started the edge of your fabric
17:56
So that all your edges are at one side. So, just place it on and then carefully work your way around
18:04
So, it just butts up against that bottom. It's just a nice finishing touch
18:10
They also look really nice with something around the top of the pot. I think with this one, I'm not going to bother
18:16
I mean, I might put the flowers on, but I think not. A bit too much for this one
18:24
And there you have it, a pot. Now, I promised to show you something else that I've made to match these pots
18:31
And here it is. I've got this lovely little pot and I made it years ago
18:36
And at the same time, I made one of these. It's called an Atui box or an exploding sewing box
18:42
And if you want to know how to make yours, there's a link below in the description
18:47
And just go and have a look now. You'll find they're easy to do too
18:51
Thank you for watching. And I hope you enjoy making yours
