0:01
hi i'm going to show you how to make a
0:04
out of popsicle sticks or craft sticks
0:06
or lolly sticks depending on what part
0:08
of the world you're from
0:09
these are really easy to make so you
0:11
could make one this afternoon
0:13
and i'm going to show you exactly how
0:15
i'm christine from christiescrafts.com
0:18
so let's get started what are you going
0:21
well you're going to need some craft
0:22
sticks or popsicle sticks some twine or
0:25
thread to hang your feeder
0:26
some scissors to cut the sticks and some
0:29
throughout this tutorial i'm going to
0:31
use hot melt glue but
0:33
a nice waterproof wood glue would work
0:36
so the first thing you need to do is
0:37
make the base of your feeder
0:39
so lay some of your crust sticks out i'm
0:41
just using a ruler as a nice straight
0:43
edge so that i can lay them out
0:45
and i'm using another stick so that i
0:48
can see how many i need
0:51
now i've got the base i'm going to look
0:53
to support it from underneath
0:55
if you've got some shorter sticks use
0:58
cut a couple down just to make some
1:01
so you can see how i'm going to place
1:03
them on mine it's just going to hold it
1:05
together a little bit better
1:08
so now i've got everything i need i'm
1:12
take one of my craft sticks not one of
1:15
cover it in hot melt glue and stick it
1:19
of those craft sticks and that'll hold
1:22
them all together now you'll see they
1:24
try and move out of the way they can be
1:25
a little bit tricky but just persevere
1:28
and then do the same on the other side
1:31
so directly opposite the first stick
1:33
we're going to stick another one
1:39
and then to get that extra support apply
1:42
some glue to your shorter sticks
1:44
and position those you could have made
1:47
them longer you could have made them
1:48
shorter you could do a zigzag pattern
1:49
you can do what you like it's just about
1:51
extra support underneath your feeder
1:54
and then turn it over and we can start
1:57
building the feeder on the top
1:59
so the first thing to do is take one
2:01
craft stick and put glue
2:03
all the way along its length and then
2:07
onto the other craft sticks in exactly
2:09
the same way as you did
2:10
underneath and repeat it on the other
2:25
and then we need to put craft sticks in
2:29
but on the other two sides i've just
2:30
turned it round so i can repeat the
2:34
and start to build a little wall on the
2:39
you'll see i've put glue all the way
2:40
along no need to do this
2:42
i don't know what i was thinking about
2:43
at the time you just need to put some
2:47
ends because that's all that's going to
2:48
stick down to the craft sticks
2:50
on the other sides so now you just need
2:53
to be applying glue to the ends of your
2:57
and now all you really do is repeat but
3:00
you'll notice that on mine i also added
3:02
in a couple of perches for the birds
3:05
so if you want to do that you just need
3:07
to take a craft stick
3:09
cut it in half and that's your two
3:13
so you're going to stick it to the first
3:16
layer of craft sticks that you put onto
3:20
i've put it near one corner and then i'm
3:24
in the opposite corner but the reason
3:27
we've put it on that layer is so that it
3:29
just gets sandwiched nicely in a moment
3:31
as i add the next layer
3:34
so now get your neck stick just glue the
3:39
and stick it on so that it goes over one
3:41
of the perches that you've just glued on
3:45
and do the same again over the other
3:57
and now it's simply a case of building
4:00
those walls up to make the sides of your
4:03
it's just so that it holds the food in
4:04
place while your birds come and find it
4:08
so i've spread this bit of foam up so
4:10
you can just see me building it
4:15
and we just keep going
4:19
keep working in pairs you'll see i keep
4:22
taking the glue off my fingers that's
4:23
the joy of hot melt glue
4:25
but just keep going until you're happy
4:29
it's entirely your choice for how deep
4:32
i wouldn't get too deep she's gonna
4:33
start getting a little bit heavy
4:37
if we just keep going and then i'll
4:40
pause to make sure i'm
4:42
happy with the height of mine and i'll
4:44
be able to show you what the edges look
4:47
to get that nice sandwiched effect
4:51
and that's it it's ready so we just need
4:56
so i'm using twine and i've poked it
4:59
inside to the outside wrap it around one
5:04
and poke it back in and then now you
5:07
need to tie that off so it's nice and
5:10
doesn't matter what knot you're using
5:18
so i took the string from inside to
5:21
round the corner and back in
5:25
and i'm now going to take the long
5:26
length and repeat that
5:29
in the diagonally opposite corner
5:32
so again see i'm going to poke out from
5:37
and i'm going to demonstrate here how
5:40
it can be very awkward to get it through
5:44
if needs be you could always thread it
5:46
on a big fat needle and poke it through
5:50
and then round the end around that
5:53
and back in and then knot it in exactly
5:56
the same way as you did the other one
5:59
and once you've got this hanging loop
6:00
you need to repeat it
6:02
for the other two corners so you end up
6:05
which you can knot together and make a
6:08
little loop at the top
6:09
just to hook over your branch or your
6:12
bird table hook or whatever you're going
6:16
these work great underneath a bird table
6:18
as an extra source because they get
6:19
protected from the weather
6:22
so there you have it completed bird
6:25
you can trim off those extra strings so
6:27
they don't get in the way
6:30
as you can see my scissors are great
6:37
and you're all finished so
6:40
repeat that for the other two corners
6:42
and then hang it in your garden
6:45
here's a nice brightly colored one i
6:46
made as well which is great for kids
6:48
so i hope you've enjoyed this video
