In this video I'm going to show you how to make super easy tassels
0:03
You can make them from yarn, embroidery thread, make them giant, make them tiny
0:07
It's all the same. I'm Christine of Christine's Crafts and this channel is dedicating to crafting on a budget
0:13
So what you're going to need is your yarn or embroidery thread or whatever you want to use for your tassel
0:19
You see I'm using embroidery thread. You're going to need some cardboard because that's what we're going to make the tassel around
0:24
A ruler and a pen if you want a certain size so we can mark our cardboard and you're going to need a
0:29
need some scissors. There's a couple of other secret things you might want which you'll find out
0:35
later on in the video just to make your tassels more professional. So the first thing you're going to do
0:40
is make your cardboard template. Now as you can see mine is about three inches wide, but a couple of inches
0:44
is usually plenty. And then you've just got to make your card as long as you want your tassel
0:50
So hence if you want a giant tassel, you're going to need a great big piece of card. So I'm just
0:55
going to make mine three inches long. So I'm just going to mark my card at three inches
0:59
and then draw a straight line and cut my card to length
1:06
This is just a template so you can make your tassels around it
1:10
And you can make lots of tassels around the same bit of cardboard. You're just going to use it over and over
1:16
if you want to make lots of tassels for your project. So that's what we're going to use to wrap our yarn or thread around
1:26
So I'll call it thread because that's what I'm using. So the first thing you need to do is cut a length that's going to act as your hanger
1:33
So it's the bit you're going to hang your tassel by. So make sure it as long as you need You can see I not made mine really long but it is what you going to hang it up by And then you going to start using your threads And you going to pull a little bit out to make it easier to get started
1:50
And you need to hold the loop that's going to form the top, just on the top of your cardboard edge
1:58
And then from the opposite edge, you're going to draw your thread up like that and start wrapping it around the cardboard
2:05
And you're just going to keep wrapping. your wrapping, make sure you don't catch that other thread in. That needs to be nice and loose
2:13
ready to tie your tassel in a moment. And just keep wrapping. Now, how wide your tassel is
2:21
how many times your wrap is entirely up to you. What I would suggest is you keep having a look
2:27
But remember that you've got threads on the front and the back of this cardboard that are going
2:33
to go together to form your tassel. So whatever you've got on the front, it's going to be actually
2:37
double that size. So you'll see I keep stopping and having a look, making sure my thread at the
2:43
top is loose and can check like that and decide have you got enough? Look at the back, think about it
2:52
Is that enough for your tassel or do you want it to be more full? If you want it to be more full
2:58
just keep wrapping and add some more. All that matters is that when you're done
3:04
you want to finish at the bottom where your other end of your thread is
3:11
And then cut off the ball of yarn or thread. And that's that
3:20
So now you need to take that loop at the top and you need to tie it Now I tend to use something like a reef knot but the first loop I do it twice because that holds it tight
3:32
and it means it doesn't come loose. So it can pull it nice and tight and then another one just to hold it
3:38
And that'll keep that nice and steady and hold it in place
3:43
Now at the opposite end of the cardboard you need to get your scissors in
3:48
and cut through all the threads. Now, this might mean they don't all end up exactly the same length
3:56
Don't worry, we can sort that at the end. But as close to the end of that cardboard as you can
4:03
if you can get right on the end, that's the best. And then you can remove your cardboard
4:09
and that's ready for another tassel. And you can see we've got a tassel forming
4:14
So make sure you smooth all the threads down and then cut yourself a length
4:21
that is probably twice the length of your tassel. That will be plenty
4:25
Twice the length of your tassel. Lay it on your bench and then lay the tassel on it
4:31
And at the height you want to draw your tassel in. So that again is entirely up to you
4:38
But make sure all those threads are lying down flat first. And then pull it really tight and then tighten and fasten off
4:48
So now you can see you've got a tassel, but we're not quite there. It doesn't look very elegant
4:53
Now the secret thing I talked about earlier was that the thread that you tied off with is always going to stick out
5:01
So you need to get either a needle that got a wide eye or a crochet hook So if you use the needle thread that yarn and then post it through the loop from the top to the bottom
5:16
and pull it and it just tucks it inside so it doesn't stick out anymore
5:21
Now if you have a crochet hook and prefer to do it this way, push the crochet hook in from the bottom
5:27
hook your yarn and pull it through. If it comes off, just go again
5:34
and get that whole loop through. and pull that till it's out the bottom
5:39
Either method works. You don't need both. You take your pick and you do that
5:43
And then you really have got a tassel where all your threads are laying nice and flat
5:49
They're looking very professional. And the only thing left that you absolutely need to do
5:55
is to lie them all down. Take a bit of time, comb them all flat so that you're happy
6:01
And then trim the bottom so that they're all the same length. You'll see, I've just realised a little
6:06
little bit is not quite straight so just go again and then trim the bottom off
6:11
Now you can comb through your threads and make them bush up if that's what you want to do
6:16
or your tassel is finished. You may also like to thread a bead onto the top
6:22
or do some beads of macrami work on the top whatever you fancy but your tassel is now ready
6:28
for whatever project you want to use it for. So as I say you can make them with yarn
6:34
you can make them with embroidery silk. Have fun. You'll find it's quite addictive, so enjoy making your tassels
