In this video, I'm going to show you exactly how to do blanket stitch including joining new threads and finishing off at the end
0:06
So that you can use it on all your projects like this cute little bean bag here. So let's get started
0:12
I'm working with two pieces of felt and you can see I've just pinned them together
0:17
Now you're going to need a needle with thread with a knot in the end and we need to think about which way you work
0:23
It doesn't matter if you go from right to left or left to right Just start by pushing your needle through from inside to outside on the front and trapping that knot inside
0:34
Now you've put that where you want your stitch to be Then take your thread over the top and bring your needle back through from the bottom through the same hole
0:42
And that's that first stitch then take your needle from right to left through that loop that you made and
0:51
Then take your needle down for your next stitch the distance apart that you want it to be and pops out the back and
0:59
Then before that loop closes push your needle through it and that's going to form that whole first blanket stitch
1:08
and then repeat so you take your needle across and then take it down from the front to the back and
1:15
then push it through the loop and Pull it tight and keep going
1:23
And you just keep going until you've done as far as you want to go
1:28
Now when you get to the corner, you keep going in the same way so put your needle through as you have been doing and then through your loop and
1:38
And You're ready to think about the corner and this time you're going to go through the same place as your last stitch and
1:49
Then as you come out the back You're going to go through the loop as normal
1:53
But you just need to make sure it goes to the corner now if it bunches up a little bit like that
1:58
just loosen it off and Then make sure it's to the corner and then again you're going to go through the same hole
2:07
Through the loop and you're safely around the corner and then you can just carry on with your blanket stitch
2:13
Just like you were doing on the other side Through the fabrics and a loop
2:22
So if you're enjoying the video, please give me a thumbs up and subscribe so that more people get to see it
2:27
And then let's think about finishing off your thread so that you're ready to start a new one
2:33
So if you're going to finish off your thread just taking those pins out so they're out of my way
2:39
Instead of taking your needle all the way through both layers like you have been doing
2:44
you're gonna just go through the front layer and Then you're going to leave a loop as if you were forming the stitch. So you need to make sure it's the right length
2:55
so that it would look right if I were to put the needle through it and
2:59
Then making sure you don't pull that thread through form a little tiny stitch inside and
3:07
then put the needle through that loop just to form a little knot so none of it pulls through and
3:12
Then cut your thread off a little way away just so it doesn't pull through
3:18
So you'll see that loop is still there when you need it
3:23
So Then you can go and get your new thread you'll get a nice long length
3:28
I'm just using this short bit that I've got here and put a knot in the end
3:33
Just like you did when you started your blanket stitch And Then you're going to go through from inside
3:43
to the outside at the back so you're finishing off that stitch and then put your needle through the loop that you left and
3:52
It will look perfectly neat as if you haven't swapped to a new thread
3:57
No one will ever know And then you can keep working along
4:03
Just as you were doing before and Then when you get to the point where your threads getting too short or you finished
4:12
Completely so we're talking about you finished all your work and you're wanting to finish off your blanket stitch
4:18
You can simply take your needle and Put it through that last stitch. So instead of carrying on like that. We're going to go
4:28
through that last stitch and Then needle through that loop so you're forming a small knot right on the edge and
4:38
Then push your needle down between the two layers of fabric and pop it out of the front one
4:44
Make sure you haven't gone through the back. You don't want a big loop out there and then cut it really close to your fabric
4:51
And then that'll just pop back through and no one will ever know that's there either
4:56
So now you should be proficient in blanket stitch and able to use it on all your projects
5:01
And I have to say one of my favorite uses for blanket stitch is
5:05
On beanbag animals like this frog and you can see you can just go all the way around
5:10
It's really neat really tidy and stops the little beans escaping And this beanbag frog will be on the channel a week after this blanket stitch tutorial
5:19
So, I hope you enjoy your sewing and please let me know in the comments below what you make
