I'll let you decide if these are the cutest makeup bags, but what we're going to do is make one today
0:05
I'm going to show you all the steps no pattern the measurements below and so is a list of supplies in case you haven't got them
0:12
So the first thing you're going to do is take your main fabric and cut a piece that's 12 inches by 9 inches
0:19
It's all cut on rectangles. So this is really easy Also from your main fabric cut two rectangles that are
0:27
three inches by five and a half inches And that's your main bits of fabric cut out
0:36
Now not only is this the cutest makeup bag or cosmetic bag
0:40
It's also fully lined so you can line it in whatever you like another fabric or you could use a plastic lining to make it
0:46
Waterproof. I'm sort of a halfway house. It's I think it's waterproof, but I wouldn't like to test it
0:53
So you need to cut that one? Eleven and a half inches by nine inches and
0:59
Two end pieces that are the same as the outer fabric So they're three inches by five and a half inches and you'll see why the big one slightly different in a moment
1:09
That's all your fabric pieces cut out. You're also going to need a zip now. It needs to be eight inches long
1:15
Don't worry if yours is longer if you've got one you want to use we can always cut it down
1:19
But it does need to be eight inches And if you want to put any fancy frills on the top, you're also going to need something to make that with
1:27
But just know you don't have to these look really pretty with nothing sewn to the top. So that's an optional extra
1:35
So now you've got everything cut out. Let's get started Take that large piece of your main fabric and put it right side down
1:43
so the pretty side is down on your table and Then get the large lining piece and put the right side of that facing up
1:51
so basically you've got your two wrong sides together and Place it in the middle
1:57
You should end up with a little bit of your main fabric showing at either end
2:01
And that's what you want and you want those to be the same size
2:06
What you need to do is either clip or pin it really doesn't matter how you hold fabric together
2:11
you'll see I'm going to use both during this tutorial and You're just going to fasten them together just to keep them nice and steady so nothing moves
2:23
You'll see I'm just going along those edges And then once you're happy it's secure not going to move anywhere
2:32
It's time to nip over to the machine and sew all the way around
2:37
So just start on one of the long sides part way along and set yourself off. How close to the edge you're asking
2:43
Well as close as you dare really you just want this nice and close. You're never going to see this sewing
2:48
It's just to hold it all together so that you don't get any problems when you're making up your bag in a moment
2:55
So just work your way down to one end and then as you get to the end of the lining
3:00
You can put your needle in Turn through 90 degrees and off you go again. You can see how close to the edge I'm going
3:08
So I've sped this up so you don't get bored But you're just going to whiz around the whole of the lining piece
3:16
and Then when you get back to where you started You can just make sure you go over the end that you started a little reverse and then you're done
3:36
So now you've got your lining piece secured to your main fabric piece
3:42
And we can move on and start building your bag So where we've got those end bits we're going to fold them over
3:53
So what you're making now is a really nice tidy edge to go next to your zip
3:58
So again, it doesn't matter if it's pins or clips Just fasten that over so you want it nice and tight over the end of your lining
4:07
And the same at the other end not surprisingly and It's over to the machine to sew all the way along those so it's a nice simple straight bit stitching
4:22
Just to secure those down So as usual I would say start with a few stitches
4:31
little reverse and Then you're off and then all the way down
4:39
I'm Sure, you've realized I speed things up in my videos so you don't get bored at the sewing machine
4:45
But I just like to include everything because otherwise I think you know you think you well, how did she do that
4:49
How did that magically happen? So just take your time. You want it all nice and neat
4:56
Believe me. I took my time So once that's done, we're going to sew in the zip. So you just need to take one of those neatened edges and
5:07
Your zip and line them up So you're going to place it with the right side up
5:14
alongside your zip And pin it in place You could clip it potentially over the zip, but I choose pins here
5:25
And all you want to do is make sure you run along that zip the same distance from it all the way along
5:30
How far away is up to you? Just make sure you don't get your fabric so close to your zip that it catches in because then you'll not use the bag and
5:37
It'll all have been a waste of time So a little gap is no problem
5:48
Once you're happy with that it's over to the machine to sew all the way along close to your folded edge
5:56
Now we are going to do the other one But I choose to just do the first one while it's nice and easy because we haven't got anything holding it into a tube
6:06
Now you'll notice I've put a zipper foot on if you haven't got a zipper foot, please don't worry
6:11
You can do this without it's just a lot easier with one
6:15
so move the Zip pull away so that you can get a nice straight edge at the start
6:22
a little bit of forward little bit of reverse And Then set off forward and you're going to run down that seam
6:33
So do a little distance and then you'll need to take your zip pull
6:38
Up to the top of the zip So you'll probably need to lift your foot to do that and then you can run to the end
6:43
My apologies for my camera remote having dropped down the back there and me not noticing
6:49
Hope it's not putting you off too much while you're wondering what it is, but it's a camera remote in a little plastic bag
6:54
So once you've got that sewn It's time to do the same on the other side so you can see how your bags forming
7:03
So it's simply going to pin it just like you did before What I would say is have a little think about which way you're gonna sew when you get to the machine
7:13
Because you'll need the foot on the side. That's not the zipper
7:17
So if you haven't got a foot that can do zips on either side It only can do a zip on one side. Just have a little think before you put your pins in
7:25
Because it's nothing worse than putting them all in and you have to take them out again and redo them
7:29
So you'll see this time. It's a little bit trickier because we've basically got a tube
7:34
So I recommend opening the zip up and if you can starting at the end away
7:39
From where your zipper pull now is where the two bits are fastened together If you can't you'll just have to work the other way and don't worry about it
7:46
But the way I do it is to run down there and then I can easily just get in that end
7:53
And doesn't cause me a problem It'll be a little bit trickier if you have to move the zip pull out the way, but you can still do it
8:02
It's just a little bit tricksy So now you've done that you can see how your bag starting to form
8:07
You can see how it's gonna be you can check your zip marks properly You've not got your fabric too close and then you can move on to putting the sides on
8:16
But if you want to put some trim on now is the time So just cut it to length doesn't matter if it's a little bit too long. You just don't want it too short and
8:26
Then you're going to pin it in place all the way along now
8:29
I've got a fancy one that I'm folding in half just because I like that effect
8:34
If you've got a nice bit of broderie on clay or a ribbon or something, you're just gonna sew it on
8:39
Now I'm putting mine right up to the folded edge of my fabric to cover all the fabric right up to the zip
8:46
You don't have to do that. You can put it a little bit further away and have a strip of fabric
8:50
This is your design you do it. However, you want to do it, but just make sure again
8:56
that you think about where you're pinning it and making sure it's going to fit with your zipper foot so that you can
9:03
Actually sew this when you get to the machine But yeah, just pin those on
9:09
Nip over to the machine and Sew them in place All I'd say is just make sure nothing wanders. Make sure nothing's getting too close to that zip and
9:20
You'll end up with a really nice finish And as ever you can see I'm doing a little bit of adjusting as I'm going take your time
9:31
And then secure at either end And then You can see I'm swapping my zipper foot because it can work on either side
9:41
If you don't have that luxury, you just have to have made sure your pins were the right way
9:47
I've got to say until recently I didn't have that luxury because this is my mum's sewing machine and when I was on mine
9:52
I didn't have that luxury and I spent a lot of time putting pins in and taking them out because I didn't think about it
9:58
Okay, so That's all ready Time to put the ends on So
10:07
You've got those ends but we've got fabric pieces and we've got lining pieces and this time they're exactly the same size
10:15
So you're going to take those ends? So I'm going to do the fabric ones first and you're going to do a little turn on the top now
10:23
It's really not crucial how big or small this turn is Quarter of an inch half an inch seems a bit big
10:30
Somewhere around there though What you want to do is just make sure you do them all the same
10:36
So I'm really more like quarter of an inch on mine So you're going to do it with the fabric ones and then you're going to repeat it with your lining ones
10:45
so just make sure that you're turning that hem to the wrong side on both your main fabric and your lining and
10:53
They should end up the same size. So just double check that before you set off to the machine
10:59
And Then it really is a nip to the machine and stitch those little hems
11:10
If you're enjoying this video and you're finding it helpful and you're getting on really well with your makeup bag or cosmetic bag
11:15
Depending what you call it, then please give me a thumbs up below I'd love this to spread to more people so they can make one of these
11:21
They really are cute and I've got to say very practical I made some of these years ago and they're still used by everybody that's got them. They seem to just keep going and going
11:32
And they're just a lovely size So once you've made those You're gonna guess what's coming next you're gonna take the lining and the fabric and you're going to sew them together
11:46
so make sure you've got wrong sides together and that you line them up and
11:52
Now the clip or pin them together and do it with both of them
11:57
and Then over to the machine and knit around the edge again. This is really close to the edge
12:04
This is just to secure them together. That's all you don't want the stitching showing anywhere
12:10
So we're going to put it nice and tight on the edge So all that again for the other one
12:21
And there you go So now is what I consider the only tricky bit of this whole thing
12:31
And it is a little bit tricky. It's putting The ends into your bag
12:38
Okay, so you can see what we're going to do. We're going to make the bag up So the first thing to do is turn your main bit of fabric with the zip on inside out
12:48
And we're going to go to the end where the zipper is where it's all secure and
12:54
Just fold it and mark the very bottom of the pouch the middle of the bottom
13:00
Doesn't matter why how you mark it just as long as you do One of your end pieces you're going to mark the bottom of that now
13:06
The bottom is the bit that has not been neatened as I'm sure you guessed
13:11
And then place the right sides together Lining up those bits you just marked
13:18
That it's going to be the bottom of your pouch your bag
13:26
And then you're going to pin your way up one side, okay
13:32
So just take your time wiggle it a little bit Work out where it's going to be and start pinning up that long side
13:38
Now I've left this normal speed so you can see how I do it There's no measuring. I just work my way up now had pinned that just to secure it just so it didn't wander around
13:49
But you don't need to And then when you get to this side, you're just going to do exactly the same thing
13:56
Yeah, pressing it through that corner with your fingers and then putting some pins up this side
14:02
And then you can see what's happening at the top So you'll see what happens is you've got a flap that hangs over and that's going to give you a nice little bit of lining
14:11
Extra panel lining inside so don't worry about that. That's fine So you can see how I do it. I'm just going to work my way up
14:18
And then when you get to this side, you're just going to do exactly the same thing
14:22
So you can see how I do it. I'm just going to work my way up And then when you get to this side, you're just going to work my way up
14:27
Extra panel lining inside so don't worry about that. That's fine What you will have to do now is make sure you close those end zip bits
14:40
So that they get secured nicely because what you're going to do now is going to make it a difference to how the top of
14:46
Your bag looks when it's finished So take your time and keep redoing it if you feel the need and
14:55
How close you go to the end of the zipper is up to you I like to go quite close
15:01
So once you think it's right I recommend you just Turn it through and have a little look
15:10
Now I wasn't happy with that. So I'm going again You can see it can be a little bit tough because you're going through the zip and all that fabric and
15:21
Then turn it through and see how that is how it is going to look when your bag is finished
15:26
So if you're happy with it, press on if you're not happy with it adjust it now now is the time
15:34
And then once you think yay, it's time to look at the other end
15:40
Now the problem of the other end is it's wide open So before you try and put the other end in I recommend that you zip it closed
15:49
And Just secure the two bits of the zip Now I'm not doing anything fancy here. Just got a needle and thread
15:59
And I'm just gonna put a few little stitches I'm not even going to finish the thread off or anything like that. It's purely a tacking stitch
16:08
Just to stop it all wandering around And that's all it's for
16:15
But A word of warning Once you've done your little tacking stitch, it's really important that you unzip your zip again
16:24
You do not want to try and sew all this with the zip closed because if you do
16:30
You will not be able to turn your bag the right way out
16:35
And you'll see how I nearly made that mistake there Okay, so then what you're gonna do
16:41
It's just pin all of this end exactly the same as you did the other end and again check it and make sure you're happy
16:47
But now you've tacked those ends together. It will be so much easier
16:53
Once you're happy with both ends, it's time to go to the machine
17:01
Now very difficult for me to show you because everything climbs But start on one of the longer sides going down towards the bottom is my advice and
17:11
Just start to work your way down so you're going to sew down there a
17:18
Reasonable seam allowance nothing massive, but it really isn't crucial. You'll just end up with a bigger or smaller bag
17:26
Not too close to the edge because you don't want it to be able to pull now when you get down to the bottom corner
17:32
Put the needle in lift the zipper foot and turn through 90 degrees now, it's really difficult to show you because it's all in the way and
17:41
Then you're going to set off along the bottom and Then when you get to the other corner, you're going to do the same thing
17:48
Now what I would say is the crucial thing as you're working around here is at each of the corners
17:53
Take your time. Make sure you're moving everything out of the way. You don't want to catch in any other bits
17:59
you want to end up with nice corners and Another top tip is when you sew along the top
18:06
You are very close to the zip and you are also going through an awful lot of fabric
18:12
So I recommend that you do it by hand There's many a machine needle been broken going through a zip that you thought you were gonna miss
18:20
So if you come to that top edge to the middle Just turn it by hand and work slowly across the top of your zip
18:27
Then hopefully if you do catch the zip you'll realize so there you go, you should now have a
18:35
Brilliant cute makeup bag or cosmetic bag. All you need to do is turn it out and then use it for what you want
