0:00
hi in this video i'm going to show you
0:01
how to make your own seed paper
0:03
so what you're going to do is make some
0:05
paper put some seeds in it great for
0:07
tags and for cards and any other crafts
0:10
every gardener would love to receive
0:12
this and you can easily attach some
0:14
instructions to tell them what to do how
0:17
is simple just rip it up and plant it
0:21
so i'm christine of christine's crafts
0:24
all about crafting on a budget so to
0:26
make your seed paper you're going to
0:28
need some sort of bowl
0:30
only a small one you're going to need
0:31
some seeds whatever seeds you select
0:35
flowers here but you can select whatever
0:38
you like perhaps something particular to
0:39
you or the person it's for
0:42
you're going to need some sort of frame
0:44
to make your paper in this is a frame
0:46
i've made just using four popsicle
0:48
you could also use an old picture frame
0:50
it doesn't matter so long as you've got
0:53
to attach your cloth to
0:56
you're also going to need some cloth to
1:00
now i've got a piece of cheesecloth here
1:02
it doesn't matter as long as it's a thin
1:03
cloth that your water will easily pass
1:06
you can see it's just larger than my
1:08
frame so that i can attach it easily
1:14
when it comes to attaching it you could
1:15
staple it on but i prefer to use these
1:18
little clips just stationary clips
1:20
holds them on nicely and it helps that i
1:23
can take them off to get the paper out
1:25
when i've finished using the frame
1:29
you're going to need some sort of
1:30
blender or mixer i use a stick blender
1:33
like this into a glass
1:35
you may have one already with a
1:37
container for it doesn't matter as long
1:40
sort of blender some old towels these
1:42
are some old kitchen towels because
1:44
you're going to try and get all your
1:47
and some paper now as you can see i'm
1:49
using up shredded paper
1:50
you don't need to you can use any paper
1:54
key thing is going to be that it has to
1:57
so i find using the shredding paper
1:59
means i'm halfway there already
2:03
so the first step is going to be dealing
2:07
so get yourself a bowl and put some
2:11
i use warm water because i believe that
2:14
it soaks in a lot better a lot quicker
2:16
but i have no scientific evidence for
2:19
so just break your paper up tear it up
2:22
get it nice and small
2:24
and fill your bowl of water now
2:27
obviously the more seed paper you want
2:29
the more paper you need to soak so it's
2:32
entirely up to you how much you want to
2:33
do perhaps you just want to do a little
2:36
you'll also notice i'm mixing some white
2:38
and some yellow so that i end up with
2:41
yellow seed paper that's paler than the
2:43
yellow paper i'm using
2:45
you can try lots of different
2:46
combinations of colors
2:48
paper napkins are a great way to add
2:50
some color to some white paper
2:52
it's entirely up to you get creative
2:54
perhaps you want to color to match the
2:58
so once it's been soaking i usually
3:00
leave mine a good hour or so
3:02
you want to take some of that place it
3:08
and blend it now obviously if your
3:10
blender has a container you're just
3:12
placing it in the container of your
3:14
you'll see i don't put too much in um
3:17
i've found that trying to just do it
3:19
directly in the bowl doesn't work for me
3:21
but if i put it in a narrow glass it
3:24
blends it beautifully
3:25
what you want to end up with is a puree
3:29
so that you can't tell any of the pieces
3:31
of paper that you started with
3:33
it's just a mushy mess
3:36
okay and once you've got it like that
3:41
you need to keep that somewhere and then
3:45
and another load until you've pureed all
3:49
notice if you have a big blender you
3:50
might just do it all in one go
3:52
but i don't so you can see it's just a
3:56
puree paste and that's going to be great
4:00
so i've just got another bowl to tip it
4:04
and then go again with the next load
4:08
and just keep blending once you've got
4:12
it's time to mix your seeds in it's up
4:15
to you how many you don't want too many
4:18
otherwise they'll end up sewn too close
4:19
together but sprinkle your seeds
4:22
and then mix it in it's really important
4:26
that you mix your seeds in
4:27
really well because you want them to be
4:30
spread throughout your seed paper
4:31
you don't want any bits of your seed
4:33
paper without any seeds in it
4:35
so just take the time to give it a
4:37
really good mix you can see i'm just
4:38
doing it with my fingers but you might
4:40
do it with a spoon it's entirely
4:42
up to you just make sure your seeds are
4:46
and then you're ready to make some paper
4:50
so the first thing i do is take one of
4:55
and lay it out on your work surface now
4:57
your work surface is still going to get
4:59
wet so make sure it's okay with that
5:02
take your frame and you're going to
5:06
so mine's a nice piece of cheese cloth
5:09
i'm just going to place it under the
5:11
and clip it on if you're stapling it on
5:15
just staple along one edge like i'm
5:24
and then move on to the side
5:29
and attach that down whether you're
5:32
or clipping and you're then going to
5:35
start pulling this tight
5:37
the idea is that your fabric is taut on
5:41
okay so if you find you can't pull it
5:45
under your clips and pull it so as you
5:48
i would probably recommend that you do
5:51
one side and the side
5:52
opposite to make sure it's taut and then
5:56
on the other two sides does it matter if
5:59
there's a bit of give and it's not
6:01
no because you're going to have your
6:03
towel underneath anyway
6:05
so do the other two sides clip it on
6:09
tight it's just to hold it in place
6:13
while you make your paper onto there
6:24
and then you've got your paper making
6:34
keep it on your towel again if your
6:36
towel's got a smooth surface it'll help
6:38
you get a nice smooth paper
6:40
you can see that mine's quite rough
6:42
doesn't matter i'm happy with a rough
6:45
and now all you do is take some of your
6:50
and push it into the frame now
6:54
the more you push in the thicker your
6:58
so if you want very fine paper make sure
7:01
you don't push too much in
7:04
it's a little bit of a learning curve
7:06
here of just putting it in and trying it
7:08
seeing what your paper is like at the
7:11
and if you decide it's too thick next
7:13
time you do it make some thinner
7:15
if it's so thin you can't get it out of
7:16
the frame you're going to have to add
7:19
so just see how you go just make sure
7:24
the whole of the fabric inside your
7:26
frame you can see i'm just pushing it up
7:29
just making sure it's nice and flat
7:33
and making sure it's completely covered
7:37
just work it with your fingers until
7:39
you're happy that it's got about the
7:50
once you're happy get one of your other
7:54
and press it onto the pulp
7:58
it compresses the paper so that you get
8:01
tight set up so that your paper doesn't
8:05
and it also pushes a lot of the water
8:08
so the water's going into the towel
8:10
below and into the towel above so it's
8:12
starting to dry your paper
8:15
and all these things mean it should hold
8:19
when you try and take it off the frame
8:22
the large amount of water on the towel
8:24
underneath so i've moved it across so
8:26
that it'll soak some more
8:28
and i'm using a different part of the
8:29
top towel to get more and more water out
8:32
the more you can get out
8:33
the better once you're happy you've got
8:37
all the water out you possibly can it'll
8:40
be time to remove it from the frame
8:42
carefully and place it somewhere to dry
8:46
i tend to use a baking tray just because
8:49
i have some large flat baking trays that
8:52
for it so because i've used clips i can
8:56
the fabric and take the paper out if
8:59
you've stapled your fabric on
9:01
you'll just have to be a little bit
9:02
careful trying to lever it out
9:05
so i've just allowed mine to drop
9:09
and then take it off the fabric and
9:12
there's my seed paper
9:14
and just repeat and obviously if you
9:16
want large pieces of seed paper just use
9:20
and that's it leave them to dry mine
9:23
take two or three days but it depends on
9:25
wet it is where you are and how hot it
9:27
is and how dry the air is
9:29
so here are some examples of cards that
9:31
you might use them for
9:33
use them for gift tags anything you like
9:35
bookmarks are a great one too
9:37
so thank you for watching good luck with
9:40
and i hope your gardening friends love
