In this video, we're going to make a flapping origami crane
0:03
They're super quick and simple. We're going to make it in five minutes, real time, no speeding up
0:08
So just make along with me. You just need a square of paper
0:12
Mine's six inches square, but you can use any size you like. So start by folding it in half
0:18
one corner to the other, so you form a triangle. Now, if you've got paper that's the same color on both sides
0:24
it doesn't matter, but if you've got one side that's colored, you want that side facing up for this step
0:30
just like I have. And then you're going to repeat it for the other two corners
0:35
So you're basically forming a cross on the front that runs from each corner to the opposite one
0:42
Turn your square over and then fold it in half one side to another
0:46
to form a rectangle. And yes, you've guessed it, repeat with the other two sides
0:52
So these are your preliminary folds before we even start making the crane
0:58
And it's going to make everything so much easier. So now you're going to open it up exactly the way I have
1:04
Bring the two side points in and down to the bottom, and it will naturally form a square just like mine
1:11
but I am going to show you that again. So bring the sides in to the bottom and flatten it down
1:18
and you'll have that lovely square. And the open bit is pointing towards you
1:25
Now take each side in turn and fold it to that center line
1:30
It doesn't matter if you're a little bit shy of the center line, but don't go over it
1:36
And you're going to do the same to the other side. And then once you've done them both
1:42
you're going to take the top and fold it down over them
1:46
right up to them, just like I have. And then open that fold up
1:51
And at all times, make sure your creases are really good. Open everything back up, lift the bottom up
1:59
and keeping that fold in place, you're going to take the bottom right up to the top
2:05
And it should naturally just go exactly where you want it to
2:10
If you have any trouble, just poke your finger in and take your time
2:14
and it should all lie flat and form that nice kite shape
2:17
on the top there. So it should look like that. Then you can turn it over and repeat all that
2:25
So you're going to take each side and fold it into the middle
2:31
and then fold that point over, because we're doing exactly the same
2:36
as we did to the other side. Again, make sure you're getting good creases
2:42
fold that over, and just as before, open all those folds up
2:48
and bring the bottom right up to the top, using that fold
2:58
And then make sure that lies flat. And now you're ready to start making your crane proper
3:06
So the first thing we're going to do is bend the bottom points up at an angle
3:11
just like I've done there. So you can see the angle doesn't actually matter
3:16
but you do want them pointing out, because you can see this is going to form your neck
3:20
and your tail shortly. I recommend you unfold them, turn the whole thing over and repeat those folds
3:28
because the next step will be a whole load easier. If you're enjoying this, please press the like button
3:33
so more people can make cranes. And now take one side, open it up and then fold the point in
3:44
So you're doing something called an inverse fold or a reverse fold, but all the folds you just made
3:48
should make it easy to get it to lie, just like mine there
3:53
Repeat it for the other side. So fold that point up inside
3:59
using the folds that you've already made. And you can see your crane is really appearing now
4:06
And then you're going to choose one side or the other, and that's going to be your head
4:11
So just decide how big you want your head and fold that over
4:16
And then just take a little bit of time and tweak it, make sure you're happy with it, and you've got your head
4:22
So we just need the wings. So you're going to fold each wing down
4:26
Now, again, quite where you put them is up to you, but make sure that at the back where the tail is
4:32
you're folding right down as far as you can. And then press those folds
4:38
And they should be exactly the same. And then you can open up the front if you want
4:43
and you can see it can stand. Now, when you pull the tail, may not pull quite as well as you're hoping
4:48
Don't panic. Just spend a little bit of time, adjust those wings
4:52
get everything moving, take your time. See how they're going beautifully now
4:57
It's just sometimes a little bit of wriggling needed. So don't panic and don't just pull
5:02
You will rip your paper. So I just wanted to show you a little tiny one
5:07
They're more fiddly because they're tiny, but you can make them and they're great to gift to people
5:11
You can hang these on a mobile. It's up to you. And I've used some copier paper to make a big one
5:18
Thank you for watching and good luck with your crane
