so you're looking for a new craft
0:01
project look no further I've got a
0:04
fabulous project for you it's something
0:06
called Locker hooking if you've never
0:08
heard of it don't worry I'm going to
0:09
talk you through the whole thing you can
0:11
make cute Bangles like this one or bags
0:16
how about a nice bag to take everywhere
0:18
you go or perhaps you'd like to cover
0:21
notebooks and make them unique it's up
0:24
to you it's a really versatile craft and
0:26
it's really cheap to get into you stay
0:28
around to the end I'm going to show you
0:30
how you can get your hands on all these
0:31
projects and lots more so let's get into
0:34
the basics and let's show you how this
0:36
craft is for you so the basics for
0:39
Locker hooking are some rug canvas and I
0:41
recommend the 3.75 holes per inch cuz
0:45
it's a bit easier than the smaller one
0:47
you're going to need a needle with a
0:49
wide eye for doing your ends in and for
0:52
doing your whip stitching some
0:54
scissors and a locker hooking needle
0:56
which I will show you later I forgot to
0:58
show you at this point
1:00
um and you're going to need some yarn
1:02
that you're actually going to do your
1:03
locker hooking with and you're going to
1:05
need something else that's thinner that
1:08
you're going to use as your medium now
1:11
you can use anything you like and I like
1:14
to use this fabric yarn because it's
1:16
really good for getting a really good
1:18
effect um on my website you can see how
1:21
to make your own fabric yarn so if
1:23
you're going to make the sampler like me
1:25
you're going to cut a rectangle 14
1:27
squares by 20 squares
1:30
and you just cut along and make sure you
1:34
don't cut into to that side that you
1:37
want but you do want to cut off all the
1:40
little sticky out bits firstly they ruin
1:42
your project at the end you know you
1:44
have them sticking out and secondly
1:46
they're really annoying so just make it
1:48
a nice tidy rectangle of your rug canvas
1:52
so you need to fold two squares over all
1:56
the way around so I've deliberately cut
2:00
mine so you can see I'm folding along
2:01
the blue but you really don't have to
2:04
just use wherever on your rug
2:06
canvas so you can see I'm just folding
2:09
two squares so that we can see exactly
2:12
how it's going to be now when we fold
2:15
over we obviously end up with it far too
2:17
thick in the corner so you just need to
2:19
cut that corner away now you know where
2:22
the corner is cuz you've marked it
2:24
you'll see my scissors are pretty poor
2:26
and that's because I like to use some
2:29
poor sciss SC some old scissors for
2:31
cutting the rug canvas don't ruin your
2:33
brand new dress making scissors on rug
2:35
canvas it's quite tough it's coated and
2:38
it's just quite tough so you cut out all
2:41
four corners and then you're ready to
2:45
fold those edges over so what I
2:48
recommend is that you move to some paper
2:51
that you're not bothered about I just
2:52
use a page so a few pages of scrap paper
2:56
cuz we're going to glue those edges down
2:59
and you're going to going to get glue
3:00
all over whatever's underneath so just
3:03
refold and pinch it nice and tight so
3:05
you know it's going to stay there
3:08
hopefully um and what you'll realize is
3:10
that the corners you really have to be
3:12
careful to get it lined up because you
3:14
need to keep those holes so that you can
3:16
get your locker hooking needle and your
3:18
yarn
3:19
through so start on one side and just
3:23
apply some glue I'm using tacky glue so
3:26
that or something similar a little
3:28
fabric glue would be fine
3:30
run it along that edge you can see I got
3:32
a bit too much at one
3:34
end and then you're just going to press
3:36
it down so you can see there's no really
3:39
a good way to avoid getting it
3:41
underneath or indeed on your fingers so
3:44
just press it down until it'll just hold
3:47
itself
3:48
there doesn't need to be glued fully yet
3:51
but you just want it to hold well enough
3:54
and I can't stress enough just make sure
3:57
everything lines up so that you keep
3:59
nice clear
4:01
holes and then you're going to move on
4:03
to the next
4:04
side so just add your
4:07
glue fold it
4:09
over and make sure it lines up now if
4:12
you're having any trouble with any of it
4:13
lining up particularly in the corners
4:16
just get a little pencil or your needle
4:18
or something and just push it through
4:20
and make sure you can still get through
4:23
those
4:24
squares and then just keep working all
4:27
the way around
4:32
you can see I'm just having to hold it a
4:34
little while and it still wants to pop
4:37
up but then once you get all four done I
4:41
recommend placing it under something
4:43
heavy while it dries um I've got an old
4:46
book that I used that I'm not bothered
4:47
about it was going to go to the charity
4:49
shop and I just kept it for this purpose
4:51
a great big old reader digest gardening
4:54
book and then once it's dry you're ready
4:57
to start so we don't start with Locker
4:59
hook
5:00
we start by cutting a length of your
5:02
chosen yarn and doing some whip
5:05
stitching around the edge now if you've
5:07
never never done whip stitching don't
5:08
worry I'm going to show you doesn't
5:10
matter if you go from left to right or
5:12
right to left and if you go in from the
5:14
top or up from the bottom it's a
5:16
personal preference what you do need to
5:18
do is start somewhere along the side do
5:20
not start at a corner we don't need any
5:22
complications there so go through with
5:26
your needle and just leave a little tail
5:29
and that's just is going to lie along
5:30
the edge of your
5:32
canvas and then bring the needle and go
5:35
back through the next hole along in the
5:38
same direction you went the first
5:41
one and then pull that through now if
5:45
you're using a fabric yarn like me it's
5:47
up to you whether you smooth it nice and
5:50
flat or keep it all roed up and give it
5:52
a bit of texture the great thing about
5:54
Locker hooking is the creativity it's
5:57
exactly how you want it to be not
5:58
somebody else
6:00
and you can see as a work along I'm just
6:02
trapping that
6:03
tail and that's the
6:07
idea and mine's lying quite flat but you
6:10
can see I'm not obsessive about getting
6:11
it smooth so I'm just going to work to
6:14
the corner so I can talk to about the
6:16
corner and then all of my whip stitching
6:18
will be done as if by Magic and when you
6:21
get to the end of your whip stitching
6:22
you're just going to feed a tail through
6:25
so when you get to the corner just go as
6:28
normal
6:30
get that whip Stitch you may find it a
6:32
bit trickier just cuz it's on the corner
6:34
with all that bulk but then go back into
6:37
the same hole
6:39
again to make sure you get plenty of
6:42
whip stitch on that corner and if you've
6:44
got a fabric yarn like mine you can take
6:46
a bit of time to arrange it and make
6:47
sure it covers that corner nicely and
6:50
then just carry on exactly as you were
6:53
doing before if you're doing a big
6:55
project and you run out of thread along
6:57
the way that's okay just leave a tail
7:00
and then carry on and fasten that tail
7:04
in so just go all the way around and it
7:07
just gives you a nice Edge to your
7:09
project and it means you can never see
7:11
that canvas so keep going
7:15
and that's the edge of your project
7:18
done so as if by Magic mine will be
7:22
done and you can see I've got a little
7:25
tail left and all I'm going to do is
7:28
feed it through through a couple of
7:30
Loops now if you're using ordinary wool
7:34
and yarn you might go through quite a
7:36
few Loops to secure it if you're using
7:38
fabric like mine a couple three that's
7:42
probably going to be enough because it
7:43
really does hold it tight and it's also
7:46
very difficult to get it through
7:47
sometimes you're trying to get a lot of
7:49
bulk
7:50
through and then you can just cut that
7:52
tail off and you're ready for Locker
7:56
hooking and as promised I am actually
7:58
going to show you the locker hooking
8:00
needles you can get them in different
8:03
sizes and we're going to use a standard
8:06
what they call a medium you may want
8:08
medium or a large but that I'm showing
8:10
you now is a small one and you really
8:12
don't want to be using that on a project
8:14
like this you want that big fat eye and
8:17
the big hook to try and catch that thick
8:19
fabric if you're using a really small
8:22
square and really fine yarn then you
8:25
might want the small one but to be
8:26
honest you won't very often want the
8:28
small one
8:31
so let's get our yarn so the first thing
8:33
we're going to do is get our locker
8:35
hooking medium and that's the bit that's
8:37
going to secure everything so I'm just
8:39
using some old yarn that I've
8:42
got and it's a cotton yarn which flows
8:45
through nice and easily it's nice and
8:47
smooth but really just find any old yarn
8:49
you've got just bear in mind it may show
8:52
in places so you might want to consider
8:55
the
8:56
color so the first thing you're going to
8:58
do is cut a length of that and thread it
9:01
through the eye of the needle of your
9:04
locker hooking needle and we're going to
9:05
start in one
9:07
corner and the pile medium that I'm
9:09
going to make my Loops out of is just
9:12
underneath and all I'm going to do is
9:14
hook it through I noticed I haven't cut
9:16
a length I'm just using it off the ball
9:19
and I'm going to pull it
9:21
through It's Tricky it's in that corner
9:23
remember how many times we've been
9:25
through there
9:26
already if you have any trouble get your
9:29
fingers in there and pull
9:33
it there we go we've got a nice big loop
9:36
now put my hook back in and then just
9:38
pull it back down to form a proper
9:41
Loop and then you simply put your locker
9:45
hook
9:45
needle back down through the next hole
9:49
now I recommend holding your pile medium
9:52
quite tort so you can hook it on nice
9:54
and easily you'll find different ways of
9:56
hooking it on your fingers and goes with
9:58
what works for
10:00
you and you just keep
10:02
repeating now when you start you might
10:05
want to do one loop at a time or you
10:07
might be prepared to go two or three but
10:09
I certainly wouldn't do more than four
10:11
Loops before you pull your needle
10:14
through and you can see I'm having a bit
10:16
of trouble and that's because it's the
10:17
edge row where we've already done the
10:19
whip stitching so don't worry it gets
10:21
easier and
10:23
easier so push the needle through and
10:27
just leave a tail and you're leaving a
10:29
tail tail that's long enough for you to
10:30
finish it off shortly so if you leave it
10:33
really short you just make the job
10:35
harder and then I'm just going to carry
10:37
on so it's needle through hook the pile
10:41
medium and then take the needle through
10:45
and you can see that first row
10:48
appearing and then we're just going to
10:50
keep going until we get to the
10:52
[Music]
10:54
end again the end one's going to be
10:57
difficult so you might want to do it
10:58
separate
11:00
see just push it through you'll
11:04
manage and then we're going to
11:07
turn there are two ways to do this and
11:09
I'm going to show you both of them in
11:11
this tutorial so the obvious way is just
11:14
to start in the next hole to come
11:17
back and carry on as you were
11:20
before so you can see always tricky on
11:23
the edge one and then I'll just do a few
11:28
get myself going long you see how the
11:31
two Edge holes are trickier just because
11:33
we've got that doubled over canvas and
11:36
then how much easier it is as you move
11:38
along and then just pull and you'll see
11:41
a little loop at the end there and
11:43
that's it you've turned and gone back
11:44
the other way and if you're happy with
11:47
that that's great I have a preference
11:50
and I prefer the other method of turning
11:52
which I'm going to show you when I
11:54
eventually get to the end
12:02
okay so let's do that last
12:06
Stitch there we go now what you can do
12:10
is take your locker hooking needle
12:14
through and then come back the other way
12:17
so you're going to push it down through
12:20
a
12:21
hole take that lock H medium to the
12:25
back and then bring it back up through a
12:28
different hole
12:32
and that way you don't end up with that
12:34
little loop on the end does it matter no
12:38
it's just a personal
12:40
preference so that's just my personal
12:44
preference and then you can just keep
12:46
going as before and work your way back
12:59
I'm hoping that what you'll find is that
13:01
as you get going you get a rhythm and
13:03
it's actually really relaxing and nice
13:05
to do you tend to see me wrestling with
13:07
the edge bits cuz we're doing such a
13:09
small piece but actually when you get
13:11
going it is really
13:13
relaxing and you get to the point where
13:16
your Loops tend to be pretty even just
13:18
naturally because you get better and
13:20
better now when I get to there I'm
13:23
finished with that pile medium I've done
13:26
that burgundy one so I'm just going to
13:28
cut it off but I'm leaving my locker
13:31
hooking medium in the hook because I'm
13:34
just going to change color and I'm
13:36
actually going to set off in a different
13:38
direction there's nothing to stop you
13:40
you can do little bits diagonally you
13:42
can do patterns there's lots of things
13:44
you can do with Locker hooking I'm just
13:46
showing you the
13:48
basics so you can see this one's a bit
13:51
thicker it's going to cause me some
13:53
problems but I like the effect it's
13:55
going to give me I like to use the
13:58
fabric yarn because I think that they
14:00
really make good solid loops and a good
14:03
solid project particularly if you're
14:04
wanting to make bags or notebooks or
14:06
something similar so all I'm going to do
14:09
is take that ball again just like I did
14:11
with the other one leave a
14:13
tail pull the first bit up now you can
14:16
see bit of trouble there just cuz it's
14:18
so thick and I'm on that edge row and
14:21
then this time I'm just going the other
14:23
way so the loops will just lie the other
14:27
way and then has no problem with doing
14:30
that you see me wrestling with it so I'm
14:34
really Keen to show you that cuz I want
14:36
you to realize that's
14:38
okay just keep going you know it's going
14:40
to get easier once you haven't got a
14:42
double layer and whip stitching in there
14:44
as well and then you're just going to
14:46
keep going and form whatever pattern you
14:48
like and you can see the pattern if you
14:51
pause the video in a moment you'll see
14:53
the pattern that I've got on
14:55
mine and you can copy that if you want
14:57
to but once you finished you've got all
14:59
these tails and we need to do something
15:02
with them so we'll start with the locker
15:04
hooking medium and all we're going to do
15:06
is get that wide-eyed needle again
15:09
thread it
15:13
up and then you're going to feed it
15:16
through Some Loops now don't feed it
15:18
through the loops that you've just come
15:19
out
15:20
of go through the row next to
15:24
it and just feed it through a few
15:27
loops pull it through cut it off that'll
15:31
just secure it that'll be absolutely
15:33
fine you don't need to do any more than
15:35
that repeat that for the rest and then
15:38
when it comes to the pile medium we're
15:42
going to do a very
15:45
similar thing so thread them up a little
15:49
bit harder cuz they're a bit thicker if
15:50
they're anything like mine and this time
15:53
you're going to go through one of the
15:57
holes near
15:59
the one that you're coming out of not
16:01
the same one near to
16:03
it and through to the
16:08
front and then once you're right through
16:10
to the front you're going to feed it
16:13
through Some Loops just like you did
16:15
with the locker hooking medium but this
16:17
time it's going to be trickier just
16:19
because it's so thick so as before if
16:25
you just get it through a couple of them
16:28
that's that's probably fine you can see
16:30
I gave up with those and decided to go
16:32
with the fatter one over here sometimes
16:34
you may have to help it through and just
16:37
keep pulling it through the loops with
16:39
your fingers but persevere and get there
16:43
and I also think if you do a larger
16:45
project you might want to do your work
16:47
your ends in as you're working your way
16:49
along don't wait till the end but I just
16:51
wanted to show you and then once you've
16:55
done all your ends and cut them all off
16:59
you've got your little project you could
17:00
back it you could attach something to it
17:03
this sky is the limit with Locker
17:04
hooking so if you just want to keep an
17:06
eye on the pattern and copy it you could
17:09
pause the video here so that you can
17:11
still see
17:12
it but thank you for staying with me
17:14
through the whole video and I hope
17:16
you're really excited to get started
17:17
with Locker hooking or indeed if you've
17:19
already started I hope you're enjoying
17:21
it now I did say at the beginning I'd
17:23
let you know all about an opportunity I
17:25
have a course all about Locker hooking
17:27
it includes all these projects and all
17:29
the details for them and all the little
17:32
nuances hints and tips and you'll know
17:33
everything you could possibly need to
17:35
know so if you'd like to join me in
17:37
there there's a link on the description
17:39
and a link on the screen and there's a
17:41
code in the description you can use to
17:42
get 30% off so I hope you're going to
17:45
join me in there but either way happy
17:48
